Home » SBI PO » SBI PO Descriptive Paper 2025

When preparing for SBI PO Mains, most students focus on the Objective Test, but the Descriptive Test is always underestimated. In reality, these 50 marks can decide whether the final merit list has your name or not. The descriptive paper comes immediately after the Objective test. By that point, the mind is already tired, which is why prior preparation is so important. Without practice, students always struggle to type fast, maintain clarity, and complete all questions in 30 minutes. In this blog, we will take you through the SBI PO descriptive paper for your better understanding.

SBI PO Descriptive 2025 Revised Pattern

The Descriptive Paper for 2025 has been slightly updated to test students’ communication skills more effectively. It consists of three questions:

SectionDetails / ChoiceMarks

  • Even if ideas are good, a poor format can lead to low scores.

Topic Included in Descriptive Paper

Email

Emails are formal messages sent for official communication or a specific purpose. In the exam, they check how well you can share information, request something, or update someone clearly and politely. Keep them short, to the point, and well-written with a greeting and proper closing.

Reports

Reports are documents that present facts about an event, project, or issue. They are used to inform, record details, and sometimes suggest actions. A report includes a title, date, introduction, main content, and conclusion. Write in proper format.

Precis Writing

Precise writing is making a long text shorter while keeping its meaning intact. It tests your ability to understand the main idea and remove unnecessary details. If you want to score good marks in this, use your own words and keep the summary clear, concise, and accurate.

Situation Analysis

Situation analysis is solving a given problem by suggesting practical and logical solutions. It tests decision-making skills. Find out the issue, analyze the causes, and give clear, workable suggestions to improve the situation.

Preparation Tips For Descriptive Paper

If you haven’t started preparing yet for the Descriptive paper, don’t worry. The SBI PO Mains 2025 is in September. It means you still have enough time. You just need to follow a study plan, practice daily, and revise smartly. Work on your writing speed and accuracy to score well in the descriptive paper. Here are some tips you can follow while preparing for this section :

1. Don’t Keep it for the Last Week

Descriptive writing improves only with regular practice. Even 15–20 minutes daily can make a big difference. This daily practice ensures that by exam day, writing feels natural and stress-free.

2. Learn the Correct Format for Each Type

Every task has a proper format:

  • Emails – Subject, greeting, body, closing.
  • Reports – Title, introduction, findings, conclusion/recommendations.
  • Precis – Concise summary, no personal opinion, only key points.
Using correct format instantly makes the answer look professional and examiner-friendly.

3. Build Typing Speed

Typing slowly wastes time. Practice typing without looking at the keyboard. Set a target for 30–35 words per minute with minimal spelling errors.

4. Keep it Clear and Simple

Students need to avoid long and complicated sentences. Examiners prefer short, to-the-point writing. For example, instead of It is being informed to you that…, simply write “We inform you that…

5. Use the Desktop to Give a Descriptive Test

Always use a desktop to practice your descriptive test for SBI PO Mains. It helps you get comfortable with typing speed, formatting, and the exam atmosphere.

6. Read and Analyse Model Answers

Go through previous years’ model answers to understand tone, length, and structure. This gives a reference for how to frame your own answers in the exam.

7. Time Management During Practice

The 30 minutes must be divided wisely:

  • Emails – 8–10 minutes
  • Reports – 10–12 minutes
  • Precis/Situation Analysis – 8–10 minutes
Always leave a minute for proofreading at the end.

8. Always Check Grammar and Spelling Mistakes

Basic grammar errors look unprofessional. Always check subject–verb agreement, punctuation, and spelling before submission.

9. Stay Focused on the Topic

Don’t go off-track just to increase word count. Examiners prefer a short, focused answer over a long, unfocused one.

10. Revise Before Submission

The last 2–3 minutes should always be used for a quick revision. Check for missing words, formatting errors, and clarity. Small corrections here can earn extra marks.

Here is what the Successful Candidates say about the practice mock. Have a look. You never know may be you are the next one.
