Types of Maths Questions Asked in RRB NTPC

Understanding the types of questions asked in the exam is very important. This can save you a lot of time by helping you avoid unnecessarily tough, high-level banking or CAT puzzles. Below, we have mentioned some of the most scoring topics and provided simple examples, so you know exactly what type of questions are asked in the RRB NTPC exam.

1. Profit, Loss & Discount

Why it is scoring: These questions are related to our daily lives (shopping and buying). If you understand the basic concept of Cost Price and Selling Price, you can solve them easily.

Sample Questions:

  • Basic: A shopkeeper buys a book for Rs. 500 and sells it for Rs. 600. What is his profit percentage?
  • Moderate: A man allows a 20% discount on his goods and still makes a profit of 10%. Find the marked price if the cost price is Rs. 800.

2. Time and Work

Why it is scoring: You can solve almost every question in this chapter using the simple “LCM Method” without needing to memorize long formulas.

Sample Questions:

  • Basic: If A can finish a work in 10 days and B can finish it in 15 days, how many days will they take to finish the work together?
  • Moderate: A and B start a work together, but A leaves after 2 days. B finishes the remaining work in 5 days. How long would A take to do the whole work alone?

3. Simple & Compound Interest (SI & CI)

Why it is scoring: Purely formula-based. Once you know the basic SI and CI formulas or the “ratio tree trick,” you can find the answer in seconds.

Sample Questions:

  • Basic: Find the Simple Interest on Rs. 1000 at a rate of 5% per year for 2 years.
  • Moderate: The difference between Compound Interest and Simple Interest on a certain sum for 2 years at 10% per annum is Rs. 40. Find the sum.

4. Elementary Statistics

Why it is scoring: This is free marks! They only ask for the basic Mean (average), Median (middle value), and Mode (most repeated value) of a small set of numbers.

Sample Questions:

  • Basic: What is the mean of the first 5 natural numbers (1, 2, 3, 4, 5)?
  • Moderate: The mean of 5 observations is 10. If a new observation 16 is added, what will be the new mean?
