₹900 is divided between A and B in the ratio 2 : 1.
How much does A receive?
Solution:
Total parts = 2 + 1 = 3
Value of 1 part = 900/3 = 300
Amount for A = 2 parts = ₹600

These appear indirectly but regularly.
Example:
A mixture has milk and water in the ratio 3 : 2.
If the total quantity is 25 litres, find the quantity of milk.
Solution:
Total parts = 3 + 2 = 5
Milk = (3/5) × 25 = 15 litres

Example:
A and B can complete a work in the ratio of their efficiencies = 3 : 2.
If together they finish the work in 10 days, in how many days will A alone finish it?
Solution:
Efficiency ratio of A : B = 3 : 2
Work ratio (time taken) = 1/efficiency = 2 : 3
Total efficiency = 3 + 2 = 5 units/day
Total work = 10 days × 5 units/day = 50 units
A’s time = 50 / 3 = 16⅔ days

Example (Ages):
The present age ratio of A and B is 4 : 5.
If B is 25 years old, find A’s age.
Solution:
4x : 5x → 5x = 25 → x = 5
A’s age = 4x = 20 years
Example (Partnership):
A invests ₹6000 and B invests ₹4000.
If A invests for 12 months and B invests for 6 months, find the profit-sharing ratio.
Solution:
Effective capital ratios =
A → 6000 × 12 = 72,000
B → 4000 × 6 = 24,000
Ratio = 72,000 : 24,000 = 3 : 1
