Phrase Replacement is a question type in RBI Grade B Phase 1. You get a sentence where part is wrong. You need to replace that phrase with the correct one. Sometimes it’s a grammar issue. Sometimes it’s a vocabulary, phrase, or idiom misuse. Knowing phrase replacement makes things easier. It saves time and avoids silly errors.
Here are the two common types of phrase replacement questions:
These questions test your knowledge of basic grammar rules. Errors can appear in subject–verb agreement, tenses, pronouns, or modifiers. A tiny grammatical mistake change the entire meaning of a sentence. Therefore, you must read the sentence carefully and find what’s going wrong grammatically. Regular grammar revision helps you find and correct such errors faster.
Example: ‘’The names have reached the Ministry of Law and Justice, who has processed the files.”
Replace who with which because the ministry is not a person.
Correct replacement: which is processing (option C).

In these types of questions, the sentence may use the wrong word, phrase, or idiom. These aren’t grammar mistakes but incorrect expressions or forms of a word. So, you must know the phrases and their meanings that are commonly used. A slight misuse, or incorrect use of them, can make a sentence awkward or incorrect. Students who read regularly and understand their correct usage (in context) can easily answer such questions..
Example: “Top leaders are stymied by the difficult of managing conflicts.”
In the sentence above, difficult should be plural difficulties, because we talk about multiple conflicts.
Correct replacement: difficulties of managing (option B).
