What is Mixture and Alligation?

Mixture and Alligation is a mathematical technique used to determine the ratio or proportion in which two or more ingredients at different prices/concentrations should be mixed to obtain a desired price/concentration. It is based on the Weighted Average concept.

Mixture: Combining two or more ingredients.

Alligation: A method used to find the ratio in which ingredients of different values are mixed to get a desired mean value.

Importance of Mixture and Alligation Questions in RRB Clerk 2025

Mixture and Alligation questions are asked in Prelims (1–2 questions). In Mains, they can come in Data Interpretation, especially in caselet or table DI formats. A good command of this topic helps in speedy problem-solving, especially in average, profit-loss, and compound interest type questions that use the same logic. 1 to 2 questions from this topic are asked every year in the Numerical Ability section of RRB Clerk exam.

Types of Mixture and Alligation Questions

Mixture and alligation questions are asked in different types, like simple mixture, complex mixture, profit and loss based alligation, average speed problems using alligation, interest based alligation questions, and ratio and percentage based mixture and alligation questions. All types with an example is shown below:

  1. Simple Mixture – Mixing two ingredients of different prices or concentrations.
    • Example: Mix two sugar solutions—one with 10% sugar and another with 30% sugar. In what ratio should they be mixed to get a 20% sugar solution?
  2. Complex Mixture – Mixing two mixtures with different ratios.
    • Example: Mixture A has milk:water = 3:2, Mixture B has milk:water = 5:3. In what ratio should they be mixed to get milk:water = 4:3?
  3. Profit/Loss Alligation – Find the overall profit/loss when multiple items are sold.
    • Example: A trader sells part of his stock at 20% profit and the rest at 10% loss. If overall profit is 5%, find the ratio of quantity sold at profit to loss.
  4. Speed & Distance – Average speed problems using alligation.
    • Example: A person travels 60 km at 30 km/h and returns the same distance at 60 km/h. Find average speed.
  5. Interest (SI/CI) – Find effective rates using alligation.
    • Example: A person invests half the amount at 10% SI and the other half at 20% SI. Find overall rate.
  6. Ratio & Percentage – Mixing different groups or percentages.
    • Example: A class has 40% boys and another has 60% boys. If both classes have equal students, find % of boys in combined class.

Question 2: Three mixtures: A, B and C containing 20% 40% and X% of water, respectively. If all these mixtures are mixed in the ratio of 1:1:2 to form a resultant mixture, and the resultant mixture contains 20% of water in it, then find the value of X.

A) 20

B) 25

C) 10

D) 15

E) None of these

Question 3: In a mixture, the ratio of wine and soda is 7:6, respectively. When 26 litres of mixture is replaced with same amount of soda, the ratio of wine to soda becomes 5:8. Find the quantity of soda in the mixture before replacement.

A) 30 litres

B) 24 litres

C) 35 litres

D) 42 litres

E) None of these

Question 4: A 260 ml mixture contains water and acid in ratio 6:7, respectively. How much acid should be added to the mixture so that the ratio of water and acid changes to 3:5, respectively?

A) 50 ml

B) 60 ml

C) 40 ml

D) 120 ml

E) None of these

Question 5: Fresh grapes contain 80% water, while dry grapes contain 10% water. If the weight of dry grapes is 120 kg then, find the weight when it is fresh.

A) 560 kg

B) 540 kg

C) 520 kg

D) 500 kg

E) None of these

Mixture and Alligation Tricks and Shortcuts

Check the shortcut logic to solve mixture and alligation most probable questions provided in this blog within seconds. Check how much time it takes to solve these questions. Set a timer beside you before approaching any question. Learn shortcuts and know how to improve your speed in solving such Arithmetic questions in RRB Clerk exam.

Question 1: Tin to Copper Ratio (5:9)

Shortcut Logic:
Let tin = 5x and copper = 9x.
Given tin = 80g → 5x = 80 → x = 16
So, copper = 9x = 9 × 16 = 144g

Answer: B) 144 grams

Question 2: Mixture Water % (Weighted Average)

Shortcut Logic:
Use weighted average:
(1×20 + 1×40 + 2×X) / (1+1+2) = 20
→ (20 + 40 + 2X)/4 = 20
→ 60 + 2X = 80 → 2X = 20 → X = 10

Answer: C) 10

Question 3: Wine-Soda Replacement

Shortcut Logic:
Let total = T
Initial ratio: Wine:Soda = 7:6 → Wine = (7/13)T, Soda = (6/13)T
After replacing 26L with soda:
Wine = (7/13)T – W_removed
Soda = (6/13)T – S_removed + 26
Final ratio = 5:8 → Set up equation:

Let T = total mixture
Let W = wine removed from 26L
Then:
(7/13)T – W = 5/13 × T
→ W = (7/13 – 5/13)T = (2/13)T
So wine in 26L = 2/13T → Soda = 26 – 2/13T = (11/13)T
Initial soda = (6/13)T = (11/13)T – 26 → Solve:
(6/13)T = (11/13)T – 26 → (5/13)T = 26 → T = 67.6L
Soda = (6/13) × 67.6 = ~31.2L

Closest Option: E) None of these

Question 4: Acid Addition to Change Ratio

Shortcut Logic:
Initial water:acid = 6:7 → Total = 260ml
Water = (6/13)×260 = 120ml
Let acid added = x
New acid = (7/13)×260 + x = 140 + x
New ratio: 120 : (140 + x) = 3 : 5
→ 5×120 = 3×(140 + x) → 600 = 420 + 3x → x = 60ml

Answer: B) 60 ml

Question 5: Fresh vs Dry Grapes

Shortcut Logic:
Dry grapes = 120kg with 10% water → Non-water = 90% = 108kg
Fresh grapes have 80% water → Non-water = 20%
So, 108kg = 20% of fresh weight → Fresh = 108 / 0.2 = 540kg

Answer: B) 540 kg

Mixture and Alligation Tricks and Formulas to Solve Questions

Learn the formula of mixture and alligation, apply tricks, use shortcut logic, and solve application-based questions like a pro. Below are some tips to solve such questions for the students who are preparing for the RRB Clerk. Some easy ways to solve the mixture and alligation questions :

Use the Alligation Rule (Diagram Method)

This method makes solving mixture and alligation questions easier:

Remember the Basic Mixture and Alligation Formula

Mean Value = (Quantity₁ × Value₁ + Quantity₂ × Value₂) ÷ (Quantity₁ + Quantity₂)

When to Use Alligation?

Apply it when two items or groups with different values are mixed, and the final average or percentage is given.

Practice with Reverse Logic

In some exams, they may give you the final mixture price or percentage and ask you to find individual quantities or costs. Practice this with a backward approach.
