Breaking Down the RBI Grade B Exam Pattern

The RBI Grade B Exam is conducted in three different phases:

Phase 1: No Typing Required

The Phase 1 exam encompasses four interesting sections. They are: General Awareness, English Language, Quantitative Aptitude, and Reasoning Ability. This phase doesn’t require any typing. So, the question of typing speed doesn’t arise here. It’s a computer-based test. All you’ll require here is a mouse and keyboard to answer MCQs.

In short, there’s no need to type long answers or paragraphs.

Phase 2: Typing May Be Relevant

The Phase 2 exam, on the other hand, includes both objective and descriptive papers. The objective section doesn’t require any typing. The descriptive section does require candidates to type their answers. And this is a part where your typing speed matters.

This phase includes three papers:

  • Paper I: Economic and Social Issues
  • Paper II: English (Writing Skills)
  • Paper III: Finance and Management

Papers II and III are descriptive in nature. It requires candidates to type their responses via a keyboard. Candidates who are comfortable typing in Hindi can use either Inscript or Remington (GAIL) keyboard layouts.

Interview: Testing of Your Communication & Other Skills

Candidates who will clear the RBI Grade B Phase II exam will be shortlisted for the interview. This round will assess their personality and find whether they are suitable for the role.

The Role of Typing Speed in Phase II

As discussed above, there is no requirement for typing in the RBI Phase I exam. On the other hand, in Phase II, candidates will have to complete descriptive papers within a limited time. This makes typing speed, along with accuracy, important. The faster they type, the more time they’ll save. This, in turn, will give them more time to craft quality descriptive answers.

However, as per the guidelines, the candidates with physical disabilities (affecting typing speed) can request compensatory time or use a scribe. This rule makes certain that all candidates get a fair opportunity to perform well. So, the typing speed can be an advantage for a general candidate, but candidates with disabilities will also be provided with accommodations to create equal conditions and guarantee the test is a fair evaluation.

Improving Typing Skills for the Exam

The time restrictions in Phase II say that the candidates need to improve their typing skills for Phase 2 exam. Here are some simple yet effective tips that they can follow to improve their typing speed and accuracy:

  • Regular Practice: Invest time in practicing typing every day without fail. They can make use of online typing tools and software for this purpose. It will help them monitor their progress continuously.
  • Know the Keyboard Layouts Well: If you choose to type in Hindi, learn the Inscript or Remington (GAIL) keyboard layouts to ensure smooth typing during the exam.
  • Time Management: Practice typing essays and reports within the allotted time to develop effective time-management strategies.
  • Pay Attention to Accuracy: Prioritize accuracy over speed initially. As your accuracy improves, speed will naturally follow.

Conclusion

In short, typing speed is not a mandatory skill for the RBI Grade B exam 2025. But it certainly helps, particularly during the descriptive section of Phase 2. So, for candidates who struggle with typing speed, they must practice typing as much as possible to improve their efficiency and make sure they complete their answers within the given time. While you don’t need lightning-fast typing skills, candidates can improve their speed to perform better in the upcoming RBI Grade B exam!
