Intense tremors have shaken Delhi-NCR.

Powerful tremors from a significant earthquake shook portions of the Delhi-National Capital Region on Tuesday.

The National Center for Seismology reported the earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2, occurring at 14:51:04 IST on 03-10-2023, with its epicenter located in Nepal at a latitude of 29.39 and longitude of 81.23, at a depth of 5 kilometers.

This seismic event, lasting over 40 seconds, induced a state of panic among residents

As per the GeoForschungsZentrum (GFZ), the national German Research Centre for Geosciences, a seismic event with a magnitude of 5.6 has occurred in the Nepal region.

afety measures for earthquakes are crucial to minimize the risks and protect yourself and your loved ones during seismic events. Here are some important safety measures to follow:

  1. Drop, Cover, and Hold On:

    • If you are indoors when an earthquake strikes, drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy piece of furniture (like a table), and hold on until the shaking stops.
    • Stay away from windows, mirrors, glass, and other objects that could shatter during the quake.
  2. Stay Indoors:

    • If you are inside a building, stay there until the shaking stops. Most injuries during earthquakes occur when people try to run outside.
  3. Secure Heavy Objects:

    • Anchor heavy furniture, appliances, and objects to prevent them from falling during the earthquake.
  4. Create Safe Zones:

    • Identify safe spots in each room, away from windows and heavy objects. Teach your family members where these spots are.
  5. Use Doorway Only If Necessary:

    • Contrary to popular belief, doorways are not always the safest place during an earthquake. It’s better to drop, cover, and hold on.
  6. Stay Away from Hazards:

    • Avoid fireplaces, gas lines, kitchen appliances, and electrical wires during the earthquake to minimize fire and electrical hazards.
  7. If Outdoors:

    • Move away from buildings, streetlights, and utility wires. Find an open area to stay.
  8. If Driving:

    • Pull over to a safe spot away from buildings, trees, and overpasses. Stay inside the vehicle until the shaking stops.
  9. Emergency Kit:

    • Prepare an emergency kit with essentials like water, non-perishable food, first-aid supplies, flashlights, and batteries.
  10. Communication:

    • Have a family emergency communication plan in place, including a meeting point in case you get separated.
  11. Educate Yourself:

    • Learn about earthquake preparedness and evacuation plans in your area.
  12. Secure Your Home:

  13. Practice Drills:

    • Conduct earthquake drills with your family or colleagues to ensure everyone knows what to do during a quake.
  14. Stay Informed:

    • Stay updated with earthquake alerts and warnings through reliable sources and smartphone apps.
  15. Help Others:

    • After the earthquake, check on your neighbors, especially those who are elderly, disabled, or have young children.
  16. Plan for Aftershocks:

    • Be prepared for aftershocks, which can follow the main earthquake. They may be less intense but can still cause damage.

Remember that earthquake preparedness is essential, especially if you live in a seismically active region. By following these safety measures and staying informed, you can significantly reduce the risks and protect yourself and your community during an earthquake.
