Tip: There is no sectional timing in this exam. So, you save time on sections that don’t require much calculation or problem-solving and use that saved time on math-type sections that need more calculation and time.
Boost Your Speed to Stand Out from Toppers
The difference between a selected candidate and a missed opportunity is usually speed and accuracy. In a 90-minute paper, you only have about 45 seconds per question on average. But sometimes a quant question takes more than 45 seconds, which can ruin your strategy. To avoid this, you should save your time from general awareness, which does not require any calculation or problem-solving skills. Questions are like “Read-Answer-Move”.
The 30-Second Rule for Efficiency
Your goal, especially in Reasoning and Maths questions, should be to solve the problem in 30 seconds or less.
A. General Awareness (The 10-Second Section)
Strategy: Treat general awareness like a visual flashcard test. Read the question, scan the options. If the answer doesn’t click in 5-10 seconds, mark it for review and move on. If you think that you can answer the questions taking 5 more seconds, then it’s ok and attempt that question (but avoid this for all questions).
Actionable Tip: Shift from reading lengthy books to revising crisp one-liners and bulleted points for static GK and current affairs.
B. General Intelligence & Reasoning (The Time Saver)
Strategy: Reasoning is a high-scoring section that can be done faster than Maths. Practice Coding-Decoding and Analogies until you can identify the pattern (e.g., +2, -3 pattern or A : Z opposite pair) instantly.
Actionable Tip: Don’t get stuck on Puzzles or Complex Seating Arrangements. If a puzzle takes more than 45 seconds to set up, skip it immediately. Come back only if time permits.
C. Mathematics (Requires Much Practice)
Strategy: For Quant, speed comes from shortcuts and calculation. You need to have the formulas for Profit & Loss, Time & Work, and Mensuration memorized so well that the moment you see the question, the formula should come into your mind.
Actionable Tip: Practice Mental Math. Do not use a calculator (even in practice). Learn the squares up to 30, cubes up to 20, and fractional values of percentages (e.g., 1/4 = 25%) to perform calculations in your head.
Now you are familiar with the syllabus, exam pattern, and how to stand out from the toppers. Let’s talk about how to plan your preparation logically and steadily so your effort pays off. Below, we have provided step-by-step guidance that will help you start your preparation for RRB NTPC 2025-26 exam.
Step 1: Understand your strengths & weaknesses
First, take a free mock test and analyze it very carefully. This will help you know your strengths and weaknesses.
Identify which section you are strong in, which section needs improvement.
That gives you a baseline and helps you know where you need to allocate your time.
Step 2: Create a realistic schedule
Divide your study into daily and weekly goals. For example:
Week 1–2: Cover basic concepts in maths + reasoning, start current affairs.
Week 3–4: Practice moderate-level questions, start mocks.
Make sure you allocate time for GA/current affairs every single day because it can not be covered during the last days of the exam due to its vast syllabus.
Keep one day each week for revision only (go over previous topics, mock test errors).
Step 3: Pick the right study material
Standard textbooks or guides for NCERT level mathematics (up to 10th/12th), since the level for many posts is not extremely advanced.
Reasoning books oriented for competitive exams: puzzles, series, coding-decoding, etc.
Current affairs magazines/compilations plus a habit of reading newspapers (or reliable daily online updates).
Mock test series (online or offline) that mimic the actual exam pattern (100 or 120 questions, negative marking).
Previous year questions or practice sets specifically for RRB NTPC (helpful to understand the pattern)
Step 4: Practice & revise effectively
After you learn a topic, immediately do practice questions on it. That reinforces learning.
Maintain a ‘mistake log’ where you note down questions you got wrong (and why). Revisit this log weekly.
Weekly full-length mocks: Every week or two, do a full test under strict exam conditions. After the test, spend time analysing: which questions were time-consuming, which topics are weak, how many you skipped, etc.
Focus revision on your weak topics, but don’t forget your strong ones. Keep practicing them to maintain strength.
For GA/Current Affairs: daily short reading + weekly summary + monthly revision. It’s not enough to read; you must revise.
Step 5: Closer to exam day
Increase the frequency of taking mock tests. We suggest that you take at least 2-3 mock tests a week and carefully analyze them.
Try to take full-length mock tests in 80 minutes instead of 90 minutes. During the real exam, this will give you a comfortable time buffer to review your answers, handle difficult questions calmly, and manage any unexpected delays.
Simulate the actual exam environment: no mobile, no breaks, full 90 minutes.
Get your health, sleep, and time-management ready. Ensure you know your exam city, reporting time, travel arrangements, etc.
A day before the exam: do light revision, avoid learning entirely new topics. Keep calm, get enough sleep. Also, take healthy and light food instead of taking oily and junk food.
Maximise Your Score in Each Section of RRB NTPC Exam
Here, we have provided section-wise tips for each major section of the exam so you can optimise your performance. You just have to go through it, follow, and implement these tips in your study.
Mathematics
Memorise formulas thoroughly (ratio-proportion, percentages, profit/loss, time & work, time & distance, etc.). If you waste time deriving formulas in the exam, you’ll lose speed.
Start with easier topics to gain confidence and build a foundation easily (e.g., percentage, ratio). Then gradually move to tougher ones (geometry, mensuration).
In practice, use shortcuts and approximation techniques (especially for time-work, speed problems) but only after you are comfortable with the basics.
During tests: If you find a question taking more than 60 seconds, you are advised to skip it and return later.
