How to solve Seating Arrangement questions within 5 minutes for SBI Clerk 2025?
The SBI Clerk 2025 exam is starting from 20th September, and students should be ready to face one of the most important topics in the reasoning section – Seating Arrangement. According to experts, every year around 5–10 questions are asked from this topic, so mastering it can make a big difference in your score. To solve seating arrangement questions within 5 minutes, first read the instructions carefully and identify the type: linear, circular, or square. Next, note down the direct information and fix definite positions. After that, place the conditional clues step by step without guessing. Always draw a clear diagram to avoid confusion. Practice is the key, so solve different patterns regularly to build speed and accuracy. With the right approach and regular practice, you can easily crack seating arrangement questions quickly in the SBI Clerk exam.
From the topic-wise weightage of the Reasoning Ability section, it is clear that Puzzle and Seating Arrangement hold the maximum weightage every year. On average, 15–23 questions are asked from this area, which means almost half of the reasoning section depends on it. This makes it a must-prepare topic for SBI Clerk 2025. Sometimes, it is combined with puzzles to test both logical and analytical skills. With regular practice, students can solve these sets within 5 minutes, which will help boost their scores. Since you know this topic consistently carries the highest weightage, focusing on the seating arrangement is a must for clearing the exam.

In a linear arrangement, people are sitting in a straight line. They may all face the same direction, like north or south, or sometimes half the people face north while the rest face south. The question will give you conditions like, “A sits third to the right of B” or “C is second to the left of D.” To solve such questions, you need to be very clear about what “right” and “left” mean depending on which direction the person is facing. If everyone faces north, right and left remain the same for all. But if some face north and some face south, then right and left get reversed for those facing south.
In a circular arrangement, people are sitting around a circular table. They may face inward, toward the center of the circle, or outward, away from the center. Sometimes, the question makes it harder by mixing both inward- and outward-facing people. Here too, you have to be careful because the meaning of “right” and “left” depends on the direction of facing. If someone faces inward, their right is clockwise. But if they face outward, their right is anti-clockwise.
This type is very similar to circular arrangement but instead of a round table, people are sitting around a square or rectangular table. Some people will sit at the corners, and others will sit at the sides. Again, they can either face inward or outward, or a mix of both. The tricky part here is to correctly fix positions for people sitting at the corners versus those sitting at the middle of the sides.
In this type, people are sitting in two parallel rows facing each other. For example, four people in one row face north, and another four in the opposite row face south. The question may say, “A faces B” or “C is second to the right of D.” It is very important to mark positions row by row and carefully note who is facing whom.
The last and most challenging type is the mixed seating arrangement. In this type, seating arrangement is combined with some other parameter. For example, eight friends may sit around a circular table, and each friend may have a different profession, favorite color, or live on a different floor of a building. Here, you not only have to place them in the right seat but also match each person with the correct additional detail.
1. If you want to solve seating arrangement questions in five minutes or even less, you must learn to approach them in a systematic way rather than rushing into the problem. The very first step is to read the question very carefully and understand what type of arrangement has been given. Sometimes it may be a linear arrangement where people are sitting in a row, sometimes it is a circular or square arrangement, and other times it may be a double-row arrangement.
2. Once you know the type, the next important thing is to look for direct clues. For example, if the questions says “A sits third to the right of B,” then you can immediately fix A and B in your diagram because their positions are connected in a clear way. However, there will also be situations when you do not get any direct clue in the beginning. Instead, the clues may be something like “A sits somewhere to the left of B” or “C is sitting between D and E,”. In such situations, you should not get stuck or waste time. The best method is to make two possible cases and continue solving both side by side. As you add more conditions, one of the cases will eventually prove to be wrong, and you can eliminate it quickly.
3.While solving, always remember to move step by step. Do not try to place all the information at once. Take one clue, place it, and then move to the next clue, connecting each condition like building blocks. This way you avoid confusion and your diagram stays clear. Along with this, it is very important to draw neat diagrams. You should always mark directions like left, right, north, south, or inside and outside in circular arrangements. If you skip this, you may confuse right with left or inside with outside.
4.Another golden rule for solving seating arrangements in 5min is daily practice. When I say daily, I mean every single day. Only through daily practice will you come across a variety of question types. As you solve them regularly, you will slowly start developing your own small tricks and shortcuts. These tricks cannot be taught directly by anyone; they come naturally when you practice and expose yourself to different patterns.
5.Finally, once you have achieved good accuracy, you should start focusing on speed. In the beginning, you may take 10 to 12 minutes for a single arrangement, and that is perfectly normal. But as you keep practicing daily, you will reduce the time to 5 minutes or less.
