How to Prepare for High-Weightage Quant Topics in RRB PO Exam
RRB PO is an exam that demands speed and accuracy. To get speed in solving questions, you need to solve the same pattern of questions from a particular topic again and again. The time left for the exam does not permit completing the whole syllabus. In such a scenario, what you can do is to cover high-weightage topics. Now the question comes, how to do multiple revisions of this topic, or how should you approach this topic? In this blog, we are discussing the same. But before that, let’s take a quick glance at the exam pattern.
Before diving into topic preparation, it is important to understand the structure of the Quantitative Aptitude section:
| Stage | Section | No. of Questions | Marks | Time Allotted |
| Prelims | Quantitative Aptitude | 40 | 40 | 20 minutes |
Below is the list of topics that hold the highest weightage across Prelims exams:
| Topic | Approx. Weightage (Prelims) |
| Simplification/Approximation | 8–10 |
| Number Series | 5 |
| Quadratic Equations | 5 |
| Data Interpretation (DI) | 10–15 |
| Arithmetic Word Problems | 10–12 |
In this section, we are providing topic wise quant strategy for the upcoming exam. Use these tips to better your preparation for the upcoming exams.
These questions are quick and high-scoring if you are fast with calculations. Make sure to learn your rules of BODMAS, percentages, ratios, and the basic operations with fractions and decimals. Use tricks for squares, cubic roots, and converting percentages. Practice 20 to 25 simplification questions per day, as accuracy is more important than speed. Try practising simplification questions first so that you have built confidence and have more time to attempt the difficult sections.
Regularly appears with predictable patterns in Prelims. Understand common patterns like arithmetic progression, geometric progression, squares, cubes, and mixed operations. Identify the logic quickly within 15–20 seconds. If not, skip and return later. Practice missing and wrong number series from the past 3–4 years of RRB PO papers.
A simple and time-saving topic. You should learn to factor quickly and then compare the roots without having to completely solve the problem. Only utilise the equation x = (−b ± √(b² − 4ac)) / 2a when needed, but otherwise, use logical thinking to determine signs and magnitudes. For speed, practice 10 sets of quadratic equations each day for one week.
For DI, you will be faced with Bar Graphs, Line Graphs, Pie Charts, Table Charts, Caselets, and Mixed DI. You need to master the basics of percentage, ratio, average, and profit & loss at the speed you can; don’t underestimate these concepts, since most DI is based on these fundamentals. Start with single graphs – either bar or line – before progressing to mixed DI. Use techniques that allow you to approximate answers for quicker calculations. You will want to skip over any sets of DI that contain too much data requiring heavy calculation. You should solve 2 DI sets each day.
Covers nearly 30–40% of the Quant section across both stages. Percentage, Ratio & Proportion, Average, Simple & Compound Interest, Profit & Loss, Time & Work, and Speed, Time & Distance. Build conceptual clarity before moving to mixed arithmetic sets. Revise basic formulas and their interconnections (e.g., the relation between speed, time, and distance). Solve topic-wise questions for accuracy. Attempt mixed arithmetic quizzes to simulate exam-level difficulty. Keep a small formula notebook for last-minute revision.
Scoring well in the Quantitative Aptitude section of the RRB PO exam depends on mastering high-weightage topics through conceptual clarity, daily practice, and time-based mock tests. Simplification, Data Interpretation, and Arithmetic Word Problems carry the highest weightage in both Prelims and Mains.
At least 4 hours daily- 2 hours for concept-building and 2 hours for timed practice or mock tests.
DI holds moderate importance in Prelims but becomes the most crucial and high-scoring topic in Mains.
