Tips to Improve Vocabulary

  • Read, read, read- While much has already been said about this topic, we would just like to reiterate the following. As you read random topics, you come across different difficult words. You can get their sense from the context and at times, you may also refer to a dictionary. Whatever is the case, if you come across the same word again during your reading, you will recall that you recently read this word somewhere and would try to recall its sense. The more you read, the more this process gets repeated and the more your vocabulary increases.
  • Keep a dictionary handy- It doesn’t matter whether you carry a hard copy or search for a word’s meaning on an online dictionary. What matters is you getting the meaning of the word and try to understand its contextual usage. The more this process gets repeated for multiple words, the better it’s for your word power.
  • Use Thesaurus- How is a thesaurus different from a dictionary; you may ask. Well, while a dictionary compiles a list of meanings of a certain word/phrase, a thesaurus compiles all the words which are related to a particular word (also known as word families). Having a curiosity over these related words simply skyrocket the probability of your learning new words.
  • Play games related to words- If you have a readily access to your phone, you can start playing games related to word power. Want to step it up a notch? Start taking your own notes of the difficult words you come across. Keep revising those lists from time to time.
  • Use Flashcards- The notes mentioned above can be prepared in the form of flashcards. Take an empty card and write the word on the front part of the card. Further, write its meaning on the back. Now, occasionally, try to recall a word’s meaning by looking at the front side of a random card. Keep doing this exercise will definitely help you retain the meanings of different words.
  • ‘A Word A Day’ Services- A majority of the platforms send you emails, notifications etc. related to vocabulary. You can search for these services and subscribe to them. This is a great way to augment your existing word power.
  • Understand the Family of Root words- This topic is mentioned properly in this article: A Guide to Master Your Vocabulary. If you understand the root words, it would be a great way to interpreting new words and thereby improving upon your word power.
  • Write & Talk- Use the new words you learned when you write something. It can be anything ranging from IBPS PO Mains essay to maintaining your own diary. Using the new words will help you resurface their meaning & usage. Similarly, when talking with like-minded people, try using the newly learnt words. If they also follow suit, you will get introduced to some extra new words from their end. You can discuss the meaning & usage which will be immensely helpful to both parties.
