Mastering Ratio & Proportion not only ensures reliable scoring but also builds confidence to tackle other arithmetic topics under time pressure. Quick, accurate solutions here save precious time for more challenging problems later in the exam.
– If A:B = x:y, then A = k × x and B = k × y for some constant k.
– Use k to convert ratios into actual values without trial and error.
– Always reduce ratios to their simplest form before applying shortcuts.
– For example, 18:24 → 3:4 simplifies later calculations.
– When dividing quantities in ratio x:y:z, think total parts = x+y+z.
– Each part = Total Quantity ÷ (x+y+z).
– Example: Divide ₹2,400 in 2:3 ratio → 5 parts → 1 part = ₹480 → shares are ₹960 and ₹1,440.
– For successive ratios A:B and B:C, combine by equating the middle term:
A:B = 2:3 and B:C = 4:5 → scale A:B:C = 2×4:3×4:3×5 = 8:12:15.
– Use ratio shortcuts for percent problems:
A:B = 3:5 → A is 3/8 of total; percent = (3/8) × 100 = 37.5%.
Inverse Ratio for Speed Problems
– Time ∝ 1/Speed. If speeds are in ratio 5:7, times are in ratio 7:5.
– Profit share = (Capital × Time) for each partner.
– If A invests for 4 months and B for 6 months in 5:7 ratio, combine capital-time products for profit ratio.
– To compare two ratios a:b and c:d, cross-multiply: a×d vs. b×c.
– Saves time on guesswork.
– For multiple-choice, eliminate obviously incorrect options before calculating.
– Strengthen ability to handle small ratio and fraction calculations mentally to avoid writing every step.
