Are you working hard day and night to crack the SSC MTS exam and get a secure central government job? We know that for many students, the Reasoning section is the key to scoring high marks. However, there is one topic that makes many students scratch their heads: Blood Relations. When a question says, “A’s father’s brother’s daughter is B,” your brain might get completely confused. You might start thinking about your own uncles and aunts to find the answer. But the best part is you do not need to guess anything. If you know how to draw a simple “Family Tree” on paper, you can solve any question in just 10 seconds. In this blog, we have explained this topic in the simplest way possible. We have also provided exam-level questions for each type that you can practice right now.

What is Blood Relation?

In the SSC MTS exam, Blood Relation simply means finding the family connection between two people based on the clues given in the question. You do not need to read thick books for this. You just need to learn how to draw a family tree. Here are the only 3 rules you need to know:

  1. Generations go Up and Down: Your grandparents are at the top, your parents are below them, you and your brothers/sisters are in the middle, and your children are at the bottom.
  2. Gender Signs: Always use a “Plus (+)” sign or a “Box” for males (boys/men). Use a “Minus (-)” sign or a “Circle” for females (girls/women).
  3. Marriage and Siblings: Use a double line (=) between husband and wife. Use a single line (-) between brothers and sisters.

The 3 Main Subjects (Types) of Blood Relation in SSC MTS:

  1. Pointing or Indicating Form: Where someone points to a photo and tells a relation.
  2. Family Tree or Puzzle Form: Where direct relations like “A is the brother of B” are given.
  3. Coded Form: Where symbols like +, -, *, % are used to show relations.

Practice: Top Exam-Level Blood Relation Questions

Now that you know the basics, it is time to test your brain. Below, we have provided top exam-level questions divided into three parts. Grab a pen, draw the family tree, and try to solve them.

Q1. Pointing to a photograph, a man said, “He is the son of the only son of my grandfather.” How is the man in the photograph related to the man speaking?

(A) Brother
(B) Son
(C) Uncle
(D) Nephew

Answer: (B) Son

Logic: “Only son of my grandfather” means the speaker’s own father. The “son of the speaker’s father” is the speaker himself. But since he is pointing to a boy, it can be his brother, or if the speaker is the only son, it is his own son. Let’s assume the speaker is the only son. So, the boy is his son.

Q2. Pointing to a woman, Rahul said, “Her mother is the only daughter of my mother.” How is Rahul related to the woman?

(A) Father
(B) Uncle (Maternal)
(C) Brother
(D) Husband

Answer: (B) Uncle (Maternal)

Logic: “Only daughter of my mother” means Rahul’s sister. So, the woman is the daughter of Rahul’s sister. This makes Rahul her maternal uncle or Mama.

Q3. A woman introduces a man as the son of the brother of her mother. How is the man related to the woman?

(A) Nephew
(B) Son
(C) Cousin
(D) Uncle

Answer: (C) Cousin

Logic: Brother of her mother is her maternal uncle (Mama). The son of the maternal uncle is a cousin.

Q4. Pointing to a girl, a boy said, “She is the daughter of my father’s only sister.” How is the girl related to the boy?

(A) Sister
(B) Cousin
(C) Niece
(D) Aunt

Logic: Father’s only sister is his Aunt (Bua). Her daughter is his cousin.

Q5. Pointing to a lady, a man said, “The son of her only brother is the brother of my wife.” How is the lady related to the man?

(A) Mother’s sister
(B) Grandmother
(C) Mother-in-law
(D) Sister of father-in-law

Answer: (D) Sister of father-in-law

Logic: Brother of his wife is his brother-in-law. The father of his brother-in-law is his father-in-law. The lady is the sister of his father-in-law.

(A) Mother
(B) Grandmother
(C) Sister
(D) Aunt

Answer: (A) Mother

Logic: “Only daughter of my mother” is the woman herself. So, she is the mother of the man.

Q8. Pointing to a photograph, a woman says, “This man’s son’s sister is my mother-in-law.” How is the woman’s husband related to the man in the photograph?

(A) Grandson
(B) Son
(C) Son-in-law
(D) Nephew

Answer: (A) Grandson

Q9. Showing a man on the screen, a girl said, “He is the brother of my uncle’s daughter.” How is the man related to the girl?

(B) Cousin
(C) Nephew

Logic: Uncle’s daughter is her cousin sister. The brother of a cousin sister is also a cousin.

(A) Grandfather
(B) Father
(C) Brother-in-law
(D) Uncle

Logic: “My daughter’s father” is Deepak himself. So, the gentleman’s brother is Deepak’s father. This makes the gentleman Deepak’s uncle.

5 Simple Tips to Prepare Blood Relations for SSC MTS

You do not need to be a genius to solve these questions. Just keep a cool head and follow these 5 easy tips:

  1. Never Guess Gender by Name: Just because a name is “Kiran” or “Sonu”, do not assume they are male or female. Always look for words like “brother,” “sister,” “his,” or “her” to confirm the gender.
  2. Draw the Family Tree: Never try to solve family puzzles in your head. Always draw the tree on your rough sheet. Put older generations on top and use plus (+) for males and minus (-) for females.
  3. Break Down Pointing Questions: For questions starting with “Pointing to a man…”, break the sentence at the word “my”. Solve the speaker’s side first, and then connect it to the person they are pointing at.
  4. Use the “Self” Trick: Sometimes, the easiest way to solve a pointing question is to put yourself in that situation. Imagine your own uncle or aunt. It helps you find the answer faster!
  5. Practice Previous Year Papers: SSC MTS repeats the pattern of Reasoning questions every year. Solve the previous year’s blood relation questions. You will see that they are very easy and highly repetitive.
