The Arithmetic section is key for enhancing your Quantitative ability score in both Prelims and Mains. Let’s evaluate some effective steps used by RRB PO toppers in planning their Arithmetic preparation.
Toppers focus on having a strong conceptual foundation before hacks and tricks. Focusing on a strong foundation means you will continue to have understanding as you begin to focus on new patterns over the long run and gain accuracy. Revise and spend time reviewing percentages, ratios, and averages. Critically think about how topics are connected. For example, Time & Work is connected with Ratio, and SI–CI is related to Percentages. Always have a notebook with formulas where you write the definition in line, the conversion, and a shortcut if there is one. You can look back at it for a few minutes a day.
Level 1 – Foundation
At this stage, the focus is on building a strong conceptual base. Topics such as Percentages, Ratios, and Averages form the backbone of arithmetic.
Level 2 – Application
Once the foundation is strong, move to application-based problems. This includes Profit & Loss, Simple & Compound Interest, Time-Speed-Distance, and Time & Work.
Level 3 – Advanced
The final stage focuses on high-level problem-solving, which can be tricky but carries high marks. This includes Mixtures & Alligation, Partnership, Mensuration, and Arithmetic-based Data Interpretation (DI).
Top performers don’t merely memorise shortcuts; they understand the logic behind the shortcuts. For example, in Mixture questions, emphasise the weighted average method, not the “alligation cross” rule alone. This understanding will help you solve twisted or unfamiliar questions in the exam with confidence.
After each arithmetic mini mock or sectional test, the toppers validate their learning by taking some sectional mocks. For Quant sectional tests, try and take tests every 2–3 days (Prelims + Mains level). You should keep a mistake logbook to reflect upon why you made the mistake, is it was conceptual confusion, calculation, or time stress. Re-do the wrong questions in about a few days to ensure that the concept sticks.
