Tips to Solve Approximation Questions

1. Master Basic Calculations

Before attempting approximation questions, you must be very strong with basic arithmetic operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. These are the foundation of approximation problems. If you take time in multiplying numbers like 42 × 57 or dividing values like 875 ÷ 25, then you will lose precious seconds in the exam. Develop the habit of practicing mental math every day—tables up to 30, squares up to 50, and cubes up to 20 should be at your fingertips.

2. Use Smart Rounding-Off Techniques

The main trick behind approximation is rounding numbers smartly without changing the accuracy of the answer. For example, instead of solving 493 × 19, approximate it as 500 × 20 = 10,000, which is very close to the actual answer. Learn how to round numbers to the nearest 10, 100, or 1000 depending on the situation.

3. Daily Practice is a Must

Approximation is a skill that improves only with consistent practice. You should make it a daily habit to solve at least 10–20 approximation questions. At first, you may need pen and paper, but within a few weeks of regular practice, you will be able to solve many problems in your head. Remember, in SBI Clerk Prelims, time is very limited, so approximation can be a time-saver only if you have practiced enough.

4. Build Pen-Paper Free Speed

One of the biggest advantages of approximation questions is that most of them can be solved mentally. The goal is to practice so much that you don’t even need to pick up your pen for many questions. For example, questions like (198.9 + 301.2) ÷ 50 can easily be solved by approximating as 500 ÷ 50 = 10 in your head. If you train your mind with repeated practice, you can solve such questions in just 5–10 seconds.

5. Identify Answers Directly from Options

With experience, you will realize that sometimes the options themselves lead you to the answer. For example, if you approximate a value to around 150, and the options are 120, 150, 200, and 250, then you can directly mark 150 without detailed calculation. However, this skill comes only after a lot of practice, where you develop the intuition to trust your estimates. At times, you’ll be able to eliminate 2–3 options quickly and find out the correct one in seconds.
