Many students dream of joining forces like BSF, CRPF, or CISF, and the SSC GD Constable exam is the first step toward that goal. In the General Intelligence and Reasoning section, many students lose marks simply because they rush. One of the easiest yet most tricky topics is the Alphabet Series. You might think, “I know my ABCD, so this will be easy” but in the exam hall pressure, finding the missing letter in a series like PMT, OOS, NQR, MSQ, ? can twist your brain. If you count on your fingers, you will waste time. But if you know the right tricks, you can solve these questions in 10 seconds. To help you practice the right patterns, we have provided a free PDF of Alphabet Series questions for SSC GD exam in this blog.

Why is the Alphabet Series Important for SSC GD?

In the Reasoning section (20 questions), the Alphabet Series carries a lot of weightage.

  • Guaranteed Marks: You will definitely see 2 to 3 questions from this topic in your shift.
  • Logic-Based: Unlike General Knowledge, where you have to memorize facts, here you just need to find the gap between letters.
  • Time Saver: If you remember the position of letters (like T=20), you can solve these faster than any Math question, saving time for difficult sections.

Find the missing letter: B, E, H, K, ?
(a) M
(b) N
(c) O
(d) L
Answer: (b) N
Logic: The pattern follows +3 each time: B → E → H → K → N.

Complete the series: AZ, CX, EV, GT, ?
(a) HS
(b) IR
(c) JQ
(d) KP
Answer: (b) IR
Logic: First letters increase by +2 (A, C, E, G → I). Second letters decrease by -2 (Z, X, V, T → R). These are also opposite letter pairs.

Which term comes next? PM, RO, TQ, VS, ?
(a) XU
(b) WU
(c) XV
(d) YU
Answer: (a) XU
Logic: First letters increase by +2 (P → R → T → V → X). Second letters also increase by +2 (M → O → Q → S → U).

Find the missing term: A, D, I, P, ?
(a) X
(b) Y
(c) Z
(d) W
Answer: (b) Y
Logic: Letters represent squares of positions: A = 1², D = 2², I = 3², P = 4². Next is 5² = 25 → Y.

Complete the continuous pattern series:
a _ b c _ a _ b c d a _ c c d
(a) a, b, c, d
(b) d, d, b, b
(c) d, d, b, d
(d) b, d, d, b
Answer: (c) d, d, b, d
Logic: The repeating pattern is adbc. The series is made of repeated groups of adbc.

Complete the series: BMO, EOQ, HQS, KSU, ?
(a) NMW
(b) NUW
(c) NUV
(d) MUW
Answer: (b) NUW
Logic:
1st letter: +3 (B → E → H → K → N)
2nd letter: +2 (M → O → Q → S → U)
3rd letter: +2 (O → Q → S → U → W)

Find the next term: Z, W, S, N, ?
(a) H
(b) I
(c) G
(d) J
Answer: (a) H
Logic: The decreasing pattern increases stepwise: −3, −4, −5, −6 → Z → W → S → N → H.

Complete the series: AB, DEF, HIJK, ?, STUVWX
(a) LMNO
(b) LMNOP
(c) MNOPQ
(d) MNOP
Answer: (c) MNOPQ
Logic: Number of letters increases: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. After HIJK (4 letters), the next 5 letters are MNOPQ.

If A → Z and B → Y, then K → ?
(a) O
(b) P
(c) Q
(d) R
Answer: (b) P
Logic: Opposite alphabet pairs. K is the 11th letter from the start; P is the 11th from the end.

Complete the series: Y, V, P, M, ?
(a) G
(b) H
(c) F
(d) I
Answer: (a) G
Logic: Alternating pattern: −3, −6, −3, −6 → Y → V → P → M → G.

5 Preparation Tips to Master the Alphabet Series for SSC GD

Reasoning is not just about intelligence; it is about technique. You don’t want to waste 2 minutes on one easy question. To score fast, you need a strategy. Here are 5 practical tips to help you master Alphabet Series questions for the SSC GD exam:

  1. Learn the “EJOTY” Trick: This is the most famous trick. Remember the word E-J-O-T-Y. The positions are 5-10-15-20-25. If you need to find ‘T’, you know it’s 20. If you need ‘S’, it’s just before T, so 19.
  2. Write Down the Reference Chart: As soon as you enter the exam hall and get your rough sheet, write A to M in one line and N to Z directly below it (in reverse). This helps you find Opposite Pairs (A-Z, B-Y, C-X) instantly without thinking.
  3. Check the Difference First: In 90% of SSC GD questions, the logic is simply the gap between letters (like +2, +3 or -1, -2). Always check the gap first before trying complex logic.
  4. Solve Continuous Patterns by Grouping: For questions like a_b_c_, count the total letters (e.g., 12). Divide them into equal groups (like 3 groups of 4). You will see the repeating pattern clearly.
  5. Practice Reverse Series: SSC GD mostly asks series in reverse order (Z, Y, X…). Practice counting backwards from Z to A so you don’t get stuck. Attempt our Free Topic Tests to master this.

How many questions can I expect from this topic?

You will definitely see 2 to 3 questions in the General Intelligence and Reasoning section.

Do I need to memorize the number of every letter?

Yes! Remembering that M=13 and W=23 saves a lot of time. Use the “EJOTY” trick or the “CFILORUX” trick to remember landmarks.

What is the “Continuous Pattern” series?

These are questions like a_bb_c_. The trick is to count the total letters (including blanks) and divide them into small equal groups to find the repeating pattern.
