The Hindu Vocab On IMD Monsoon Prediction 2024<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

India\u2019s farmers must account for a stronger monsoon while sowing\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a bountiful (large in amount<\/strong>) <\/strong>monsoon. Rainfall from June-September is\u00a0expected to be 6% more than the 87 cm, which is considered to be the average rainfall the country receives during these months. This is a fairly bold forecast by the agency that, typically in its April forecast, avoids suggesting either surplus or deficit rain. Given that temperatures in many southern States are soaring (rising very quickly to a high level<\/strong>) <\/strong>and stoking heatwaves, the anticipation of bountiful rainfall might sound like welcome news. There is however a dark cloud to this silver lining. The IMD\u2019s climate models suggest a 30% chance of \u201cexcess\u201d rains \u2014 defined as more than 10% of what is usual. By comparison (the act of comparing two or more people or things<\/strong>), its expectation of \u201cabove normal\u201d rains is 31%, defined as between 5%-10% of what is normal. The slim difference suggests that excessive (an amount that is more than acceptable, expected, or reasonable<\/strong>) <\/strong>rains are as likely as merely \u2018above normal\u2019 showers. Most of these rains are expected in the second half of the monsoon, or August and September. The IMD\u2019s models forecast for this are premised on the\u00a0development of a La Ni\u00f1a, or a converse of the El Ni\u00f1o (which more often than not results in a decrease in monsoon rainfall). The La Ni\u00f1a is also expected to be aided by a positive Indian Ocean Dipole, characterised by a cooler than normal Indian Ocean in the east as compared to the west, that helps bring rain to several States in southern India. The IMD is silent on the quantity of rains in June and July but expects \u201cneutral (not saying or doing anything that would encourage or help any of the groups involved in an argument or war<\/strong>) <\/strong>conditions\u201d (neither El Ni\u00f1o, nor La Ni\u00f1a) to be prevalent that time. Two arid monsoon months and torrential (used to refer to very heavy rain<\/strong>) <\/strong>rains in the last two may be fine for agriculture but is likely to result in extreme floods and \u2014 as has been observed in the past \u2014 immense damage to lives, livelihoods and infrastructure. The\u00a02018 floods in Kerala\u00a0continue to be a reminder of how vulnerable (able to be easily physically or mentally hurt, influenced, or attacked<\/strong>) <\/strong>India is to natural disasters. While an update to the forecast is expected around the end of May, the IMD\u2019s current signal must be urgently heeded. States must, at the soonest, draw up emergency plans from their disaster-management modules (One of a set of separate parts that, when combined, form a complete whole<\/strong>) <\/strong>to bolster infrastructure<\/strong> (the basic systems and services, such as transport and power supplies, that a country or organization uses in order to work effectively<\/strong>), prepare evacuation (the act of moving people from a dangerous place to somewhere safe<\/strong>) <\/strong>plans, conduct audits of the structural stability (a situation in which something is not likely to move or change<\/strong>) <\/strong>of dams and their distress-signalling network and ensure that broader early-warning networks are in place. Also, India\u2019s farmers, a majority of whom continue to be dependent (needing the support of something or someone in order to continue existing or operating<\/strong>) <\/strong>on rain-fed agriculture, must also be informed of the possibility of a stronger, second half of the monsoon and incorporate these in their sowing operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
