The Hindu Vocab On The Julian Assange Case \u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The U.S. should drop charges against Assange and hold up free speech\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

President Joseph Biden\u2019s comments, made off the cuff at the White House this week, that his administration is\u00a0\u201cconsidering\u201d a request by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese\u00a0to drop charges against\u00a0WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, has sent a ripple<\/strong> (a usually slight noticeable effect or reaction<\/strong>) of hope for his family and supporters. Mr. Assange, an Australian citizen, is in the U.K.\u2019s Belmarsh Prison, and is awaiting (to wait for or be waiting for something<\/strong>) a British court decision on whether he can appeal\u00a0a 2022 extradition order\u00a0that would send him to the U.S. to face serious charges for the publication of U.S. government and diplomatic<\/strong> (involving diplomats or the management of the relationships between countries<\/strong>) cables in 2010. The court\u2019s order is due on May 20, and it has asked the U.S. for assurances that he will not face the death penalty. However, Mr. Albanese\u2019s appeal to Mr. Biden may make that decision redundant (especially of a word, phrase, etc.) unnecessary because it is more than is needed<\/strong>). Mr. Assange, 52, has been punished quite a lot already, while seeking asylum and under arrest, and, according to his family, is too ill and anxious<\/strong> (worried and nervous<\/strong>) about being extradited<\/strong> (to make someone return for trial to another country or state where they have been accused of doing something illegal<\/strong>). Mr. Assange has faced a Swedish warrant for rape and assault, charges he denied, and the case was dropped. In the U.S. he faces 18 charges that could total 175 years in prison. The charges, 17 of which are under the U.S.\u2019s century-old Espionage Act, pertain to the publication by\u00a0WikiLeaks\u00a0of thousands of classified U.S. documents related to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, many of which showed the U.S. army\u2019s methods in a bad light, and revealed U.S. government strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To be sure, Mr. Assange\u2019s decision to publish the trove of documents without check, and the revelation (the act of making something known that was secret, or a fact that is made known<\/strong>) of names of specific U.S. officials, employees, soldiers and civilians, put many lives at risk. Governments are entitled to have their national security secrets, and confidentiality (secret or private, often in a formal, business, or military situation<\/strong>) is respected for a reason. It is also true that, in several instances<\/strong> (a particular situation, event, or fact, especially an example of something that happens generally<\/strong>),\u00a0WikiLeaks\u00a0did partner with media organisations to do the scrutiny required when confronted<\/strong> (having to deal with something or someone that you find difficult or threatening<\/strong>) with secret documents, to ensure that only those in public interest were revealed. But there was also some element of \u201cdata dumping\u201d bypassing any careful journalistic effort that may have earned it more protections<\/strong> (to keep someone or something safe from injury, damage, or loss<\/strong>). However, it is hard for the U.S. to explain why it has thrown the book at Mr. Assange as the publisher, but not his source,\u00a0U.S. Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning. The Biden administration has made the protection of democracy worldwide a policy priority, and to continue to prosecute (to officially accuse someone of committing a crime in a law court, or (of a lawyer) to try to prove that a person accused of committing a crime is guilty of that crime<\/strong>) a transparency<\/strong> (the quality of being done in an open way without secrets<\/strong>) activist, while castigating governments worldwide for hounding whistle-blowers, free speech activists and public accountability<\/strong> (the fact of being responsible for what you do and able to give a satisfactory reason for it, or the degree to which this happens<\/strong>) NGOs, seems contradictory<\/strong> (if two or more facts, pieces of advice, etc. are contradictory, they are very different from each other<\/strong>). More than ever, the U.S. can show by example, in the Assange case, that it believes in democratic freedoms, and not in \u201cshooting the messenger\u201d for shining a spotlight on the way its government works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
