Jaishankar stressed the importance of maintaining the Indian Ocean as a free, open and inclusive space<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Supreme Court rules licence fee paid by telecom firms is capital expenditure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Supreme Court dismissed the arguments of telecom companies like <strong>Bharti Airtel<\/strong> and <strong>Vodafone Idea<\/strong> and sided with the <strong>Income Tax Department<\/strong> on the nature of the licence fee paid by them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The court ruled that the licence fee, which is based on <strong>Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR)<\/strong>, is a <strong>capital expenditure<\/strong>, not a <strong>revenue expenditure<\/strong>. This means that the telecom firms cannot claim tax deductions on the fee.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The court overturned previous rulings by the Delhi, Bombay, and Karnataka High Courts, which had favoured the telecom firms. The court also upheld the <strong>DoT\u2019s calculations<\/strong> of the outstanding AGR dues of the telecom firms.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The ruling follows a 2019 directive by the Supreme Court that required telecom firms to pay their AGR dues within a 10-year timeline. Indian Navy personnel have already started mock operations to recover the module.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Gaganyaan project aims to send three crew members to an orbit of 400km for a three-day mission and bring them back safely.
