GATE scores are also used for recruitment in many public sector undertakings and private companies.

In the GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) exam, the terms rank, score, and marks are 3 different things and are still used to evaluate the performance of the candidates.

Sign Up to Take a Free Mock Test

Difference B/W Marks vs Scores vs Rank

To understand the concepts of marks, rank, and score in the GATE exam, we need to first understand the exam pattern. The GATE exam consists of 65 questions with a total of 100 marks. The exam is conducted in multiple sessions, and the questions are of multiple-choice type, numerical answer type, and fill-in-the-blank type.

Marks

The total marks in the GATE exam are 100. Each question carries either one or two marks, and there is a negative marking in all MCQ-type questions of 1/3rd for every wrong answer in questions carrying one mark, and 2/3rd for every wrong answer in questions carrying two marks. The marks obtained by a candidate in the GATE exam are the total number of correct answers multiplied by the marks per question minus the negative marking for incorrect answers. For example, if a candidate answers 45 questions correctly out of which 20 questions are of 1 mark and 25 questions are of 2 marks, and he marks 10 questions incorrectly with one mark each, and 5 questions incorrectly with two marks each, then their total marks would be (20 * 1)+(25 * 2) – (10 x 1/3) – (5 x 2/3) = 63.34 (This Calculation is based on the fact that all attempted questions are MCQ type of questions).

Read More: About GATE Exam Preparation

Rank

The rank in the GATE exam is a relative measure of a candidate’s performance compared to all other candidates who appeared for the exam. The rank is calculated based on the GATE score, which is a normalized score out of 1000. The normalization process takes into account the variation in the difficulty level of the exam across different sessions. The rank is assigned based on the GATE score, and the candidate with the highest GATE score is ranked first. The rank of a candidate is an important factor in determining their eligibility for admission into postgraduate courses and recruitment in public sector undertakings and private companies.

Score

The GATE score is a normalized score out of 1000, calculated using the following formula:

GATE Normalisation Formula

The GATE score is used to determine the rank of a candidate, and it is also used for admission into postgraduate courses and recruitment in public sector undertakings and private companies. The GATE score takes into account the total marks obtained by a candidate, the maximum marks, and the normalization factor. The normalization factor is used to account for the variation in the difficulty level of the exam across different sessions.

What is GATE Rank 2023?

GATE Rank is decided by the candidate’s scores in the GATE exam 2023. After evaluating the candidate’s marks, each qualified candidate is allocated a certain rank. The candidate can proceed with PG admission in various colleges/institutions based on this All India Rank (AIR). A candidate’s GATE rank is their position in order of merit in a given subject. GATE marks vs rank, in other words, is an indicator of candidate rank matching candidate marks.

What is Good GATE Rank 2023?

Candidates should be aware of their good rank on the GATE 2023 exam. A rank within 200 will confirm a response from a PSU for most engineering branches, while a rank of less than 1,000 has a decent probability of acquiring your selected branch at lITs or NITs. Every candidate should remember that a strong GATE result does not guarantee a job at a PSU or an IT. Most PUs and ITs conduct interviews and group discussions before selecting a candidate.

The marks obtained by the toppers of various branches in the GATE 2022 exams are included in the table below.
GATE Rank and Marks of Mechanical Engineering (ME)

Rank Marks Score (Out of 1000)

1 90.5 1000

2 86.84 1000

6 81.95 956

28 77.88 910

66 74.26 869

70 74.03 867

72 73.92 866

87 73.39 860

117 71.82 842

GATE Rank and Marks for Civil Engineering (CE)

The GATE score vs rank for civil engineering (CE) is listed below.

GATE Rank

GATE Score

1

87.72

3

83.78

5

83.13

7

82.15

9

82.08

10

81.73

GATE Rank and Score for Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE)

The Gate score vs rank for electronics and communication Engineering ( ECE) is listed below.

GATE Rank

GATE Score

1

89.00

3

82.67

4

82.00

6

81.00

7

80.33

9

80.00

GATE Rank and Score of Electrical Engineering (EE)

The GATE score vs rank for Electrical Engineering (EE) has been listed in the table below.

GATE Rank

GATE Score

1

97.33

2

97.00

4

96.33

5

95.67

7

95.00

10

94.33

GATE Rank and Score for Computer Science Engineering (CSE)

The GATE score vs rank for Computer Science Engineering (CSE) is listed below :

GATE Rank

GATE Score

1

88.67

2

88.33

3

87.00

9

84.67

Conclusion

The marks obtained by a candidate in the GATE exam are the total number of correct answers multiplied by the marks per question minus the negative marking for incorrect answers.
