If you are planning to appear in this exam this year and you are thinking that you will start your preparation when the notification is out than you might be mistaken. The Tier 1 exam is just qualifying in nature, but still, it is not going to be that easy. You cannot afford to waste time on chapters that rarely appear in the exam. You can start your preparation for the SSC CGL 2026 Tier 1 exam with important topics. To save your time and energy, I have filtered out the important topics for the Tier 1 exam and provided them in this blog. These are the topics where the question frequency is high, and the difficulty level is usually moderate.

Take a Free Mock Test of SSC CGL 2026 Tier 1 Exam

1. Quantitative Aptitude (Maths) – Speed and Accuracy is a Must

In Tier 1, you get only 60 minutes for 100 questions. You cannot spend 2 minutes on a hard geometry problem. You need topics that are quick to solve.

Top Priority Topics (High Weightage in Tier 1):

Data Interpretation (DI): This is the easiest way to grab 8-10 marks. You will typically get 3-4 questions based on Bar Graphs or Pie Charts. They just require simple addition and percentage calculation.

Arithmetic (The Backbone): Unlike Tier 2, Tier 1 loves Arithmetic. Focus heavily on:

Profit & Loss: Discount and “Dishonest Shopkeeper” questions are very common.

Percentage & Ratio: These are the foundation. If you master these, you can solve half the paper.

Simple & Compound Interest: Learn the “Tree Method” or “Ratio Method” to solve CI questions in 30 seconds.

Algebra: Focus on Basic Identities (x + 1/x). You will definitely see 2-3 questions here.

Geometry: Don’t go too deep. Stick to Circle properties (Chords/Tangents) and Triangle centers.

Smart Tip: Leave the “Calculative” questions for the end. If a question takes more than 1 minute, skip it immediately.

2. General Intelligence (Reasoning) – The “45+ Marks” Section

This is your best friend. Most successful candidates score 45 to 48 marks out of 50 here. The logic in Tier 1 is standard and repetitive.

Top Priority Topics:

Coding-Decoding: Expect 3-4 questions. Practice “Letter Shifting” (+2, -2 logic) and “Number Coding”.

Analogy & Classification: These are the “Odd One Out” or “Relationship” questions. They are fast but tricky.

Series (Missing Number): These can be trap questions. If you don’t see the logic in 30 seconds, skip it.

Non-Verbal Reasoning: Mirror Images, Paper Folding, and Embedded Figures. These are “free marks.” You can solve them visually without lifting your pen.

3. English Comprehension – Grammar vs. Vocab

In Tier 1, the English section is usually balanced. You don’t need to be a literature expert, just a rule-follower.

Top Priority Topics:

Vocabulary (50% of the paper):

Idioms & Phrases: These are fun and easy to remember.

One Word Substitution (OWS): Very high scoring. Memorize groups like “Phobias,” “Studies (ology),” and “Government types (cracy).”

Synonyms/Antonyms: Focus on Previous Year Questions (PYQs). SSC repeats vocab often.

Grammar:

Error Spotting: Mostly from Subject-Verb Agreement and Prepositions.

Active-Passive Voice: In Tier 1, these are very easy. Just look at the verb change (e.g., “eats” becomes “is eaten”).

4. General Awareness (GK) – The “Do or Die” Section

This is the hardest section to predict. Do not try to read thick history books now. Be selective.

Top Priority Topics:

Static GK (The Saviour):

Art & Culture: Folk Dances, Classical Dancers, and Festivals. (SSC loves asking “Which dancer belongs to which Gharana?”).

Books & Authors: Focus on recent books by famous personalities.

Current Affairs:

Cover the last 6-8 months (focus on Sports Awards, New Appointments, and Government Schemes).

Science:

Biology: Vitamins, Diseases, and Human Body Systems.

Chemistry: Common names of chemicals (e.g., What is the formula of Washing Soda?).

Final Strategy for SSC CGL 2026 Tier 1

Don’t Chase 200/200: Remember, marks of Tier 1 are not added to the final merit list. You just need to clear the cutoff.

Mock Test Routine: Take a mock test every alternate day. Analyze which section is eating your time.

Accuracy over Attempts: There is 0.50 negative marking. If you guess 4 wrong, you lose 2 marks + the marks of the questions themselves. It’s a double loss.

Focus on your strong subjects, ignore the noise, and just ensure you qualify comfortably. You have enough time. Start with the “High Priority” topics listed above, and you will see your score boost automatically. Just keep in mind that you can do it.

Join our exclusive Telegram group for expert guidance, personalized tips, and real-time solutions to boost your SSC exam prep.
