In the LIC AAO Prelims exam, 4 to 5 questions are asked from this topic. In the LIC AAO Mains exam too, inequality questions are asked in the form of Data Sufficiency problems/ statements. Therefore, inequality questions are an important source of securing good marks in the Reasoning section. To solve these questions, you need to know the basic concepts to solve them with accuracy. In this blog, we are discussing the basic concepts to solve Inequality questions in LIC AAO exam.

Take a Free LIC AAO Mock Test 2025

LIC AAO 2025 Complete Notification Details

What are Inequality Questions in LIC AAO Exam?

Inequality questions are a part of the Logical Reasoning subject and are often asked in the Reasoning Ability section of the LIC AAO Exam. These are also called Mathematical Inequalities. Inequality Reasoning questions are questions that involve inequality expressions like <, >, <=, >=, and = (inequality signs). There are different types of inequality reasoning questions. The most common types of inequality questions are basic inequalities, either/or case inequality, and coded inequality.

The inequality symbols are expressed as below:

Symbol

Meaning

A > B

A is greater than B

A < B

A is less than B

A = B

A is equal to B

A ≥ B

A is either greater than or equal to B

A ≤ B

A is either less than or equal to B

A ≠ B

A is either greater than or less than B

Types of Inequalities in Reasoning Section of LIC AAO

There are three types of Inequalities which is used more often in the LIC AAO exam. These are explained below:

1. Basic Inequality

In this type of inequality question, a comparison between different elements is given, and the relation between any 2 elements is asked.

2. Either – or Case

In this type of question, we cannot decide a definite relation between two elements. From the given 2 relations, either relation 1 or 2 can be true.

3. Coded Inequality

In this type of question, codes will be assigned to symbols, and the expression will be given using those codes. To solve it, you need to decode the symbols and find the relation between the elements.

Inequality Questions Solving Techniques

For solving basic inequality problems, you need to check the order of the symbols used. For solving the either-or case, you need to check the complementary pairs and derive the conclusions. To solve coded inequality questions, you need to decode the symbols used (for example, A% B means A is the father of B).

Basic rules for solving Inequality questions are provided below:

Statement

Conclusion

A > B >C

A > C

A > B ≥ C

A ≥ B > C

A = B > C

A > B = C

A < B < C

A < C

A < B ≤ C

A ≤ B < C

A = B < C

A < B = C

A ≥ B ≥ C

A > C or A = C

A = B ≥ C

A ≥ B = C

A ≤ B ≤ C

A < C or A = C

A = B ≤ C

A ≤ B = C

A < B > C

No conclusion can be inferred

A ≤ B > C

A < B ≥ C

A > B < C

A > B ≤ C

A ≥ B < C

Basic rules for solving inequalities either-or case questions are provided below:

Complementary Pair

Conditions

> + =

Elements in both conclusions should be the same.
