Over the past few years, the U.S. government has intensified (intensified – made more severe or stronger) its Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations to identify, detain (detain – to hold or keep someone in custody), and deport individuals without proper documentation. For instance, between June and October 2024, the Department of Homeland Security reported that 1,60,000 individuals had been deported on 495 international repatriation (repatriation – the process of returning someone to their own country) flights to more than 145 countries, including India. However, the manner (manner – a way of doing something) and timing should be cause for concern for New Delhi. To begin with, these deportations coincide (coincide – occur at the same time) with a major crackdown (crackdown – a severe and sudden effort to stop illegal activity) by ICE, spurred (spurred – encouraged or motivated) by Donald Trump’s swearing-in as the U.S. President in January. He has made illegal immigration his “number one priority”. India, which has one of the largest populations of illegal immigrants in the U.S., estimated at 7,25,000 undocumented (undocumented – without legal or official documents) individuals, will need to prepare for a significant increase in the number of returning migrants. Second, for the first time, the use of military flights signals (signals – indicates or shows) that the U.S. does not intend to be challenged. This move drew protests (protests – strong objections or demonstrations against something) from Colombian President Gustavo Petro, particularly after reports emerged of deported migrants being shackled (shackled – held or tied with metal chains or restraints). The U.S. Embassy in Delhi has also made it clear that this deportation is part of a broader initiative (initiative – a new plan or action to achieve something) to tighten immigration laws and enforcement, reinforcing (reinforcing – strengthening or supporting) the message that illegal migration is not worth the risk. Further, the timing, just ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s U.S. visit, suggests that diplomatic efforts alone may not be enough to deter (deter – discourage or prevent) the Trump administration from pursuing such measures. This has the potential (potential – the capacity to develop or happen in the future) to become a bilateral flashpoint (flashpoint – a critical situation that could quickly become dangerous) in India-U.S. relations.

Hindu Vocab Wordlist 7th February 2025

Upskill yourself and enhance your vocabulary knowledge.
