Home » IBPS RRB PO » Time, Speed & Distance for RRB PO 2025, Check Tips & Mistakes to Avoid

Time, Speed & Distance is one of the most common and high-yielding topics in the Quantitative Aptitude section of RRB PO Prelims and Mains exams. You can expect 1–2 questions directly from this chapter and sometimes even as part of caselets or DI sets in Mains. It checks your ability to apply formulas, logical thinking, and unit conversion, making it an essential topic for any banking aspirant. Read this blog to understand the basics, see a solved example, learn tips, and avoid common mistakes.

What is Time, Speed & Distance?

This topic is based on the relationship between:

  • Speed: How fast an object moves
  • Distance: The length covered
  • Time: How long the object travels

The basic formula is:
Speed = Distance / Time
From this, you can derive:

  • Distance = Speed × Time

Time = Distance / Speed

Tips to Remember While Solving Time, Speed & Distance Questions

  1. Understand Units
    • Always convert speed to m/s or km/hr based on what is asked.
    • Use:
      • 1 km/hr = 5/18 m/s
      • 1 m/s = 18/5 km/hr
  2. Use Basic Formula First
    • Start with S = D/T and plug in values. Don’t overcomplicate it.
  3. Practice Relative Speed
    • Used when two objects move toward or away from each other.
      • Same direction: Subtract speeds
      • Opposite direction: Add speeds
  4. Train Questions Need Focus
    • Use the total length of train and platform.
    • Convert time in seconds if speed is in m/s.
  5. Boat & Stream = Speed Upstream/Downstream
    • Upstream = Speed – Stream
    • Downstream = Speed + Stream

Mistakes to Avoid While Solving Time, Speed & Distance Questions

Here are some common tips you should avoid while solving Time, Speed & Distance.

Not Converting Time Properly

  • Example: 2 hours 30 minutes = 2.5 hours, not 2.3

Skipping Units in Final Answer

  • Always mention km/hr or m/s – avoid silly mistakes in mocks/exams.

Mixing Upstream/Downstream Logic

  • Always remember: Water helps in the downstream, resists in the upstream.

Forgetting to Convert Minutes to Hours

  • Time must be in the same unit as speed (hours/minutes).

Trying to Solve Without Diagrams

  • Draw a timeline or flow diagram for train/boat questions; it helps avoid confusion.
