Time, Speed, and Distance is one of the most important topics in the Quantitative Aptitude section of RRB PO 2025. It is a basic arithmetic concept that helps you understand motion, rates, and distance.
This topic forms the base of many other chapters like trains, boats & streams, and races. Questions are often easy to moderate, and if you know the right formula and tricks, you can solve them within seconds. In this blog, you will find the types of questions asked about Time, Speed, and distance in the RRB PO exam.

What is Time, Speed & Distance?

It is a mathematical relationship between the speed at which something travels, the distance it travels, and the time it takes to travel that distance. The basic formula is:

Formula

  • Speed = Distance / Time
  • Time = Distance / Speed
  • Distance = Speed × Time

Units must be the same. Always convert km/hr to m/s using:
1 km/hr = (5/18) m/s
And vice versa: 1 m/s = (18/5) km/hr

Weightage of Time, Speed & Distance in RRB PO Prelims & Mains

  • Prelims: 2–4 questions
  • Mains: 4–6 questions (includes Boats & Streams, Trains, Relative Speed, etc.)

It is always combined with other chapters in word problems and Data Interpretation questions as well.

Tips to Solve Speed, Distance & Time Questions

1. Master the Core Formula

At the heart of every question lies one basic formula:

Speed = Distance / Time

 Rearranged this formula as per question’s need:

  • Distance = Speed × Time
  • Time = Distance / Speed

Always check that units are consistent.
To convert:

  • 1 km/hr = 5/18 m/s
  • 1 m/s = 18/5 km/hr

2. Focus on Units and Conversion

Many questions play on unit confusion. For example, distance in meters, time in seconds, and speed in km/hr.

 Always convert everything into compatible units before solving.

 Example:

A car travels 90 km in 1.5 hours. What is its speed in m/s?
Convert 90 km to meters = 90,000 m
Convert 1.5 hr to seconds = 5400 sec
Speed = 90000 / 5400 = 16.67 m/s

3. Understand and Use Relative Speed

When two objects move:

  • Toward each other: Relative Speed = Speed1 + Speed2
  • In same direction: Relative Speed = Speed1 – Speed2

Use this for questions like:

  • Two trains crossing each other
  • Man walking on moving train or platform
  • Vehicles overtaking or chasing each other

 Example:

A and B run towards each other at 6 km/h and 4 km/h from 200 km apart.
Time to meet = Distance / (6 + 4) = 200 / 10 = 20 hours

4. Use Ratio & Proportion for Time-Saving

When two speeds are in ratio a : b, their time taken is in ratio b : a.

 Example:

A covers a distance in 5 hours at 60 km/h.
If he had travelled at 75 km/h, the time taken = (60 : 75 = 4:5)
Then time = 5 × 4/5 = 4 hours

This saves time over full calculation.

5. Late-Early Arrival Based Questions

When a person arrives early or late depending on speed, assume a fixed distance and create equations.

 Example:

A man is late by 30 mins if he walks at 5 km/hr and early by 15 mins at 6 km/hr.
Use:

Distance = Speed × Time

Set up two equations using the difference in time to calculate the exact distance.
