The seven technical parts of the SSC JE exam are not seven subjects that every candidate has to study together. They are separate technical options associated with different posts and educational streams. For example, Civil Engineering candidates follow Part A, Electrical Engineering candidates follow Part B, and Mechanical Engineering candidates follow Part C. The relevant Scientific Assistant streams in the India Meteorological Department (IMD) use Parts D, E or F, while Junior Engineer (Telecom) uses Part G.
Candidates should confirm the technical part applicable to their post before making a study plan. The subject or stream selected in the application cannot be changed under the provisions stated in the notification.
Download the SSC JE Syllabus PDF 2026 to check the complete topic-wise syllabus for Paper 1 and Paper 2 in one place. It covers the SSC JE CBT 1 Syllabus 2026, including General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Awareness, and the technical subjects for different streams. The PDF also helps candidates review the detailed technical topics for Civil, Electrical, Mechanical and other applicable disciplines. Keep it handy while preparing to track topics, plan revision and ensure that no important part of the prescribed syllabus is missed.
The SSC JE exam pattern 2026 consists of two computer-based papers. Paper I assesses reasoning, general awareness and technical knowledge, while Paper II tests the technical subject applicable to the selected post.
SSC JE Paper I contains 200 objective questions for 200 marks. The common subjects account for 100 marks, and the technical section accounts for the remaining 100 marks.
| Section | Number of Questions | Maximum Marks |
| General Intelligence and Reasoning | 50 | 50 |
| General Awareness | 50 | 50 |
| Applicable technical subject | 100 | 100 |
| Total | 200 | 200 |
| Duration | 2 hours |
The SSC JE technical part in Paper I depends on the post and stream selected by the candidate. The available parts are Part A Civil and Structural Engineering, Part B Electrical Engineering, Part C Mechanical Engineering, Part D Computer Science and Information Technology, Part E Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, Part F Physics, and Part G Telecommunication Engineering.
SSC JE Paper I has a two-hour duration for most candidates. Candidates eligible for a scribe or compensatory time under the applicable notification provisions may receive additional time, as prescribed by the Commission.
SSC JE Paper II is entirely technical. It does not contain separate General Intelligence and Reasoning or General Awareness sections.
| Paper 2 | Questions | Marks | Time |
| Part A: General Engineering (Civil & Structural) | 100 | 300 | 2 Hrs. |
| OR | |||
| Part B: General Engineering (Electrical) | 100 | 300 | 2 Hrs. |
| OR | |||
| Part C: General Engineering (Mechanical) | 100 | 300 | 2 Hrs. |
Candidates must attempt the technical subject applicable to their selected post and qualification. The technical part followed in SSC JE Paper II corresponds to the relevant part selected in the application. Candidates applying for more than one eligible post must follow the notification’s instructions on appearing for the respective paper or papers.
The SSC JE marking scheme awards marks for correct answers and deducts marks for incorrect answers in both papers. The penalty differs between the papers, so candidates should account for negative marking while practising objective questions.
| Response | Paper I | Paper II |
| Correct answer | +1 | +3 |
| Incorrect answer | −0.25 | −1 |
| Unattempted question | 0 | 0 |
A wrong answer in the SSC JE Paper I exam reduces the score by 0.25 mark, whereas a wrong answer in Paper II reduces it by one mark. Leaving a question unanswered does not attract a penalty. Candidates should therefore focus on accuracy and avoid random guessing, especially in Paper II, where every question carries three marks.
Yes. SSC JE Paper I is qualifying in nature. Candidates are shortlisted for Paper II according to their merit, subject to obtaining the minimum qualifying marks in Paper I. Normalized Paper I marks are used for shortlisting, while only normalized Paper II scores are used to determine final merit.
The SSC JE CBT 1 Syllabus 2026 has three sections: General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Awareness and the applicable technical subject. The first two sections are compulsory for all candidates, while the third section changes according to the post and qualification selected in the application.
The technical component is a core part of the SSC JE Paper I, not an optional extra. Candidates should first identify the applicable part and then cover its topics alongside Reasoning and General Awareness.
The official SSC JE notification provides a broad technical syllabus under Paper I and a more detailed topic-wise breakdown under Paper II. Since the selected technical subject applies to both papers, the complete topic tables in this guide are organised by technical part and should be used to plan technical preparation for Paper I as well as Paper II.
The SSC JE General Intelligence and Reasoning section contains 50 questions for 50 marks. It tests verbal and non-verbal reasoning, logical thinking, observation, problem-solving and the ability to understand relationships between words, numbers, figures and symbols.
| Topic | What It Covers |
| Analogies | Relationships between words, numbers, symbols or figures |

The SSC JE reasoning syllabus includes both verbal and non-verbal question types. Candidates should practise more than one format for each topic and review mistakes to identify whether an error came from misunderstanding the pattern, overlooking information or calculating incorrectly.
The SSC JE notification describes these topics as indicative. Candidates should therefore build familiarity with variations of the listed question types rather than memorise only a few question formats.
The SSC JE General Awareness section contains 50 questions for 50 marks. It tests knowledge of current events, the environment and society, everyday scientific observations, and important information about India and neighbouring countries.
| Subject Area | Detailed Coverage |
| Current Events | Important national and international developments and events |

| Everyday Science | Scientific aspects of everyday observations and experiences |
The official SSC JE general awareness syllabus does not require specialised study of a particular academic discipline for the General Awareness section. It focuses on broad awareness and the ability to understand the scientific aspects of everyday observations.
Candidates should cover static General Awareness and current affairs together. For static topics, focus on history, culture, geography, economics and polity. For current events, understand the context and significance of major developments rather than relying only on memorised headlines. Basic science should also be revised because questions may test common scientific principles and their practical relevance.
