FRANCIS TURBINE

The Francis turbine is a reaction turbine, which means that the working fluid changes pressure as it moves through the turbine, giving up its energy. The turbine is located between the high-pressure water source and the low-pressure water exit, usually at the base of a dam.

Key Point:-

· It is used for medium head (60m to 300m)

· It is used for medium specific speed (60 to 300)

· Its flow ratio, Y = 0.15 – 0.30

· Speed ratio, k_u = 0.60 – 0.90

· It is inward radial flow reaction turbine

Note-

(i) Old Francis turbine is inward radial flow turbine.

(ii) Modern Francis turbine is mixed flow reaction turbine (radial in & axial out).
