Unlike Prelims, the Mains-level RC passages are longer, concept-based, and inference-driven. They often include editorial-style topics or fact-based reports from domains like economics, environment, technology, and social issues.
Your score in this section depends on three key abilities:
These questions test your ability to derive conclusions not directly stated in the passage.
Example:
“What can be inferred about the author’s view on government subsidies?”
Tip: Look for implied meanings and tone, not literal statements.
Questions include synonyms, antonyms, or contextual meanings of highlighted words.
Tip: Don’t memorize words blindly understand meanings from context within the passage.
These questions ask about the author’s tone, attitude, or central idea.
Common tones: Critical, Analytical, Optimistic, Skeptical, or Argumentative.
Example Question:
“What is the tone of the passage?”
“Which of the following best describes the main idea?”
These are direct questions where answers are clearly stated in the passage.
Tip: For factual questions, scan rather than read line-by-line, focus on names, numbers, and examples.
These questions test logical understanding. You may need to identify whether a statement supports, contradicts, or is irrelevant to the passage.
Example:
“Statement A is true according to the passage. Statement B contradicts the author’s view.”
A recent trend in IBPS exams is mixing RC with critical reasoning elements, such as assumption, conclusion, or course of action.
Example:
“Which of the following best strengthens the author’s argument?”
Practice reading editorials from the newspaper. Focus on understanding the core idea instead of remembering every detail.
IBPS frequently tests indirect understanding. Practice at least 2 inference RC sets daily to sharpen your analytical reading.
Maintain a short notebook of frequently used editorial words (like “paradox,” “catalyst,” “incentivize”) and revise daily.
Attempt previous years’ IBPS Clerk and PO Mains RCs to understand the question framing style.
Use PracticeMock sectional tests for targeted RC practice. These replicate real exam difficulty and timer pressure.
