From April 1, 2024, the designation “IBPS Clerk” has officially been renamed to “IBPS Customer Service Associate (CSA)”. Though the title has changed, the responsibilities are largely the same centered around customer service, banking operations, and supporting the overall workflow of a bank branch. This role plays a back-end position in public sector banks. An IBPS CSA is often the first point of contact for customers. They handle various tasks ranging from cash deposits to helping customers with account-related queries. Their work ensures that daily banking services run smoothly and efficiently.

 

What Does an IBPS Customer Service Assistant Do?

A Customer Service Associate wears many hats in the day-to-day functioning of a bank. Their tasks can be divided into the following categories:

 1. Customer Service

One of the most important duties of an IBPS CSA is to assist customers. They sit at the inquiry counter and attend to walk-in customers. Whether it’s helping someone open a new bank account, printing a bank statement, or guiding customers through internet banking, CSAs play a key role in ensuring a smooth customer experience.

They also handle queries related to loans, digital payments, debit cards, passbooks, and government schemes. Solving minor complaints or guiding the customer to the right department is part of their routine.

 2. Account Management

CSAs help customers with account-related services. This includes verifying documents to open new accounts, updating KYC details, issuing passbooks or cheque books, and managing other documents. These tasks require accuracy, a good understanding of banking rules, and attention to detail.

 3. Cash Handling and Transactions

A CSA is also responsible for handling cash. They process daily deposits and withdrawals, handle cheques and demand drafts, and update ledgers. They maintain a cash register and ensure the balance at the end of the day matches the bank’s records. This task demands trust, honesty, and precision.

 4. Administrative & Support Tasks

Beyond customer-facing work, a CSA supports the bank’s internal operations. This includes updating balance sheets, data entry, document verification, maintaining records, and assisting officers in treasury operations. They might also issue instruments like Demand Drafts and manage backend digital services.

 5. Computer Aptitude Tasks

Though there’s no separate section for computer awareness in the Mains exam, CSAs are expected to be comfortable with basic computer skills. They work with banking software, data systems, and manage digital operations. At times, logic-based computer questions are part of the recruitment process, especially in the Reasoning section of the exam.
