A Quadratic Equation is any equation of the form:
ax2 + bx + c = 0
Where:
The roots of the equation are the values of x that satisfy it.
Formula to find the roots:
Here, the discriminant (D) = ( b2 – 4ac ) helps determine the nature of roots:
Q1. x² – 9x + 20 = 0 and y² – 7y + 10 = 0
Find the relation between x and y.
Solution:
x² – 9x + 20 = 0 → (x – 5)(x – 4) = 0 → x = 5 or 4
y² – 7y + 10 = 0 → (y – 5)(y – 2) = 0 → y = 5 or 2
Comparing possible values, the relation cannot be determined.
Answer: x = y or No relation
Q2. x² – 8x + 15 = 0 and y² – 10y + 21 = 0
x = 3, 5 and y = 3, 7
Hence, x ≤ y.

Most questions involve finding the relationship between two variables (x and y). You’ll need to compare their roots and determine whether x > y, x < y, x = y, or no relation can be established.
In Prelims, around 5 questions are usually asked as a separate set in the Quant section. These are considered moderate-level and scoring if practised well.
The most frequent forms are:
Simple quadratics (ax² + bx + c = 0)
Equations with fractional or negative coefficients
Equations requiring factorisation or the use of the quadratic formula
Avoid sign errors during factorisation, skipping coefficient simplification, and misjudging roots. Always verify by substituting values and simplify equations properly before comparison.
Learn basic algebraic identities and factorisation techniques. Practice previous year papers and sectional tests regularly. Once confident, move to mixed Arithmetic + Quadratic sets to build speed and accuracy.
