Pair Formation Reasoning is an important topic in the reasoning section of the RRB PO 2025 exam. The Pair formation questions check the candidate’s ability, identify a pattern, and form pairs based on given conditions. Mastering pair formation questions can boost your score, as they are often straightforward once you understand the questions. In this article, we are explaining a detailed analysis of the concept of pair formation reasoning, common question types, and effective tips to solve them with ease.
Pair Formation Reasoning involves creating pairs of elements, such as people, objects, or numbers, based on specific conditions or rules provided in the question. These questions boost your logical thinking, attention to detail, and the ability to interpret relationships. They are commonly asked in competitive exams like the RRB PO 2025 exam.
In the RRB PO 2025 exam, pair formation questions typically appear in the reasoning section, which carries significant weight (usually 35–40 marks). These questions may involve:
Question 1: In a certain language, ‘PASTEL’ is written as ‘RZUVVN’ and ‘DEALER’ is written as ‘FVZNVT’. How will ‘NORMAL’ be written in that language?
A) PQTOCN
B) PLTOZN
C) PQTNZO
D) PLTPZO
E) None of the above
Question 2: How many pairs of digits are there in the number ‘67439281’, which has as many digits between them in the number (both forward and backward) as in the number series?
A) Six
B) Seven
C) Four
D) Five
E) None of the above
Question 3: If a meaningful four-letter English word is formed by using the 1st, 3rd, 4th and 6th letter (from the left end) of the word ‘INSOMNIA’ then which of the following will be third letter from the left end of the word formed? If more than one such meaningful word is formed mark ‘Y’ as your answer. If no meaningful word is formed, mark ‘Z’ as your answer.
A) Z
B) O
C) N
D) I
E) Y
Question 4: If in a number 876553421, ‘1’ is added to all the even digits and ‘1’ is subtracted from all the odd digits. Then, which of the following digit/digits are repeated twice in the new number?
A) Only 7
B) Only 7 and 2
C) Only 4 and 2
D) Only 4
E) None of the above
Question 5: If a meaningful English word is formed by using the 3rd, 6th, 7th and 11thletters (from the left end) of the word ‘POSTGRADUATE’ then which of the following will be third letter of the word formed from the right end. If more than one such meaningful word is formed mark ‘Y’ as your answer and if no meaningful word is formed, then mark ‘Z’ as your answer.
A) R
B) A
C) Z
D) T
E) Y
You can expect 1-2 questions based on this in your Reasoning Ability section of RRB PO Prelims. The questions usually appear in two types:
A word is given, and you need to find the number of such pairs that appear the same as in the English alphabetical series.
Example:
How many pairs of letters are there in the word ‘BANKING’ as per the English alphabetical order, both in forward and backwards directions?
A series of random letters is given instead of a meaningful word.
Example:
Example: From the word ‘DEPOSIT’, using the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 6th letters (E, P, S, I) you can form the word ‘PIES’.
An Odd Pair is a pair of numbers, letters, or words where one pair is different from the rest based on a particular pattern, relationship, or rule.
Example:
Which of the following pairs is odd?
A) HIJL
B) MNOQ
C) DEFH
D) RSTV
E) WXYZ
Here, (E) is odd pair
Similar logic but applied to a string of numbers instead of letters.
Check for pairs where the difference between two numbers matches their sequential position.Example:
Number string: 563241
5-6 (difference 1), 6-3 (difference 3)… etc.
Mastering these questions involves a systematic approach. Here we are providing the step-by-step method to solve Pair Formation Questions. Candidates can check the detailed strategy in the section below.
Write down all the position numbers of each letter as per the English alphabetical order.
Example:
DIRECTION → D(4), I(9), R(18), E(5), C(3), T(20), I(9), O(15), N(14)
For each letter, check the difference between its position and the positions of the letters after it in the word.
The difference in their positions in the word should be the same as the difference in their alphabetical positions.
Example:
Between D(4) and E(5) — positions 1 and 4 in the word, difference = 3
In alphabet: 5 – 4 = 1 (not equal, so no pair)
Do this for all possible pairs.
Most questions specify both forward and backward pairs — so don’t forget to check both.
Memorise Alphabetical Positions: Keep the position values (A=1, B=2, …, Z=26) handy in mind to avoid wasting time.
Use a Quick Difference Method: The simplest way is to see if the difference in positions in the word and the difference in the alphabet are the same.
Practice Random Series Questions: These are trickier than word-based ones, so add a few series-based pair formation questions to your practice.
Look for Common Pairs: Common alphabet pairs like A-B, B-C, D-E, etc. are easier to spot.
