If you are preparing for the SSC Stenographer exam, you already know that the General Intelligence and Reasoning section carries a massive 50 marks. This section alone can make or break your final selection. Inside this section, “Non-Verbal Reasoning” is an absolute goldmine for free marks.

Many students get confused when they see strange drawings, rotating arrows, or folded paper diagrams on their computer screens. They think these visual puzzles will eat up their time. But here is a big secret: Non-Verbal Reasoning does not require any formulas, calculations, or reading long paragraphs. It is purely a visual game. Once you train your eyes to catch the “hidden pattern,” you can solve these image questions in less than 5 seconds using the elimination trick.

In this blog, we have explained this topic in the simplest words possible and provided the top exam-level questions that the Staff Selection Commission repeats every single year.

What is Non-Verbal Reasoning? (Explained in Simple Words)

You do not need any special logic books to understand this. “Verbal” means words, and “Non-Verbal” means no words!

Non-Verbal Reasoning contains questions that only have pictures, drawings, or symbols. Your job is to look at the pictures and find the hidden rule.

For the SSC Stenographer exam, you only need to focus on these 5 simple categories:

  • Mirror and Water Images: If you place a mirror next to an image, how will it look? (Remember: In a mirror, Left becomes Right. In water, Top becomes Bottom).
  • Paper Cutting & Folding: If you fold a square paper, punch a hole in it, and open it again, how will it look?
  • Hidden / Embedded Figures: A simple shape (like a ‘Z’) is hidden inside a very messy, complex drawing. You have to spot it.
  • Figure Completion: A drawing is given with one piece missing (like a jigsaw puzzle). You have to find the missing piece from the 4 options.
  • Figure Series: You are given 3 or 4 boxes with drawings changing step-by-step (like an arrow turning like a clock). You have to guess the next drawing.

If you just practice looking at these specific types daily, your eyes will automatically catch the right answer in the exam hall!

Important Non-Verbal Reasoning Questions

Now that you know the basic patterns, it is time to test your eyes and brain! Grab a pen and solve these top repeated image-based questions that perfectly match the SSC Stenographer exam level.

(Note: In the real exam, you will see actual images. Here, we have described the visual logic perfectly so you can practice your mental imagination!)

Question 1: The sequence of folding a piece of paper and the manner in which it is folded has been cut and is shown in the following figure. How would this paper look when unfolded?

Answer: D)

Solution:
The pattern is as followed:

Hence, option d.

Question 2: Select the box that can be formed by folding the given sheet along the lines.

A) Only B and D
B) Only A and B
C) Only B and C
D) Only D and C

Answer: C)

Solution:

Same type of symbols is, at opposite side of paper, hence cannot appear on two adjacent sides.

Only B and C have numbers that are not appearing on adjacent sides.

Hence, option c.

Question 3: Select an appropriate figure from the four options that would complete the figure.

Answer: D)

Solution:
Number of stars is increasing, and number of circles are decreasing in each step.

In 1st diagram, there are 1 star and 3 circle, in 2nd figure there are 2 stars and 2 circles, in 3rd diagram, there are 3 stars and 1 circle, in 4th diagram, there are four stars and 0 circles, similarly, there will be 5 stars in 5th diagram.

Hence, option d.

Question 4: Find the number of triangles in the given figure?

A) Eight
B) Seven
C) Six
D) Five

Answer: B)

Solution:

Triangles: LMN, FIB, BED, BCD, FNB, LHB and BIN.

So, there are seven triangles in the given figure.

Hence, option b.

Question 5: Select the option in which the given figure is embedded.

Answer: B)

Solution:
The embedded figure is shown below,

Hence, option b.

5 Simple Tips to Prepare Non-Verbal Reasoning

You do not need to be an artist to score full marks here. Just keep your mind cool and follow these easy tricks:

  • The Elimination Trick: Do not try to find the 100% correct answer directly. Just find a small detail (like a missing dot or wrong arrow direction) and cross out the 3 wrong options. The remaining one is your answer!
  • Track Only One Element: In a box where 4 to 5 small shapes are moving together, never look at all of them at once. Your brain will get confused. Just pick one shape (e.g., the star) and see how it is moving. That single shape will eliminate most wrong options.
  • Use Your Rough Paper: For mirror images and water images, write the word on your rough sheet with a heavy pen. Then flip the paper over and look at it from the back. You will see the exact mirror image!
  • Learn Rotation Degrees: Train your brain to easily recognize a 45-degree turn, a 90-degree turn, and a 180-degree turn. This is the only “math” used in image series questions.
  • Practice Daily on a Screen: Since the SSC Stenographer is a computer-based test (CBT), do not just practice from printed books. Give online mock tests so your eyes get used to spotting image patterns on a digital screen.

FAQs: Non-Verbal Reasoning Questions

1. Is Non-Verbal Reasoning a difficult topic in the SSC Stenographer exam?

No, not at all! It is actually the easiest and most scoring part of the Reasoning section. Because there is no calculation or reading involved, you can solve these questions in seconds.

2. How many image-based questions come in the exam?

Out of the 50 Reasoning questions in the SSC Stenographer exam, you can comfortably expect around 5 to 8 questions purely based on non-verbal figures and images.

3. Do I need to draw anything in the actual exam?

Absolutely not. You just have to look at the computer screen and click on the right option (A, B, C, or D).

4. What is the best way to solve Paper Cutting questions without actual paper?

Use the “Reverse Mirror” trick. Unfolding a paper is exactly the same as creating a mirror image. Just mentally draw a mirror image of the cut part towards the folded line.

5. Is there a negative marking for wrong answers in Reasoning?

Yes. In the SSC Stenographer exam, there is a strict negative marking (usually 0.25 marks or 1/3rd depending on the latest notification) for every wrong answer. If an image is totally confusing you, it is better to skip it.
