The Prelims is on Dec 28, leaving you with only 26 days of preparation. In this article, we have come up with tips to help you in your preparation for the English section. This section will have 50 questions and it needs to be solved in 40 minutes. You need to start your preparation right away and practice on a consistent basis to get good marks in this section and clear sectional cut-off as well.
Unlike other sections, where you need to do calculations or need to memorize facts, the English section is based on your mastery of rules & word power. These two aspects (rules & word power) can be mastered with practice and reviewing your performance on an ongoing basis. You also need to work on your weak areas so as to improve your overall performance. Let’s have a look at the list of topics you need to be ready with:
- Cloze Test
- Correct Usage
- Error Spotting
- Fillers – Single, Double
- Idioms and Phrases
- Odd One Out
- One Word Substitution
- Para jumbles
- Paragraph Completion
- Reading Comprehension
- Sentence Improvement
- Synonyms/ Antonyms
- Vocabulary based questions
- Word/Phrase Replacement
Here are some preparation tips to prepare for this section.
Your reading speed and vocabulary matters a lot to get good marks in this section. We strongly suggest you solve 1-2 Reading Comprehension passages on a daily basis. Only solving them won’t be sufficient; you need to review your attempts. Highlight the questions which you skipped/ answered incorrectly and analyse what went wrong with them. If you haven’t already, start reading the editorial of a prominent financial newspaper which would definitely increase your reading speed.
Get acquainted with the basic grammar rules of tenses, sentence correction, preposition etc. Don’t try to mug those up; rather start understanding the rules and start implementing them as you practice in these remaining 26 days. The more you practice and review your performance, the better you will remember the rules. Please also be mindful of the negative marks and avoid guesses.
Here once again your word power and familiarity with idioms/ phrases and knowledge of grammatical rules will come into the picture. This is because error spotting can be in the form of an incorrectly used grammar rule, incorrect usage of words (and their forms), preposition etc. Do a lot of practice on a daily basis and go through the detailed explanation of the attempted question to have a better understanding of questions on this topic.
This type of question tests your comprehension skills. Not only do you need to read fast but you also need to understand it and try to arrange the fragments to form a coherent paragraph. This is one of the trickiest topics of English section and you really need to do a lot of practice to master para jumbles. After doing the practice, don’t miss out on having a look at the detailed solutions so as to understand the logic behind each of the question answered.
