Thinking about SSC MTS 2026 exam it means you have already taken the first and most important step towards your dream government job. According to the latest SSC calendar, the SSC MTS 2026 exam is expected to happen between September and November 2026. This means you have a solid 6 to 7 months in your hands right now. While most students wait for the official notification to drop in June before they even open a book, you are starting early. This is a massive advantage. But when you are a complete beginner, looking at heavy books can feel very confusing and scary. “Where do I start? Which subject is important? Should I read the newspaper every day?” Do not worry at all! Take a deep breath. In this blog, we will tell you exactly how to start your SSC MTS 2026 preparation from absolute zero.

Step 1: Understand the Exam Pattern (Know the Rules)

Before you start your preparation for any exam, you must know how many questions will be asked, how many marks of a section, and much more. The SSC MTS exam is a single-day computer-based test, but it is divided into two parts (sessions).

  • Session 1 (Maths & Reasoning): This part is just for “qualifying.” The best news? There is no negative marking here! You just need to score basic passing marks to clear it.
  • Session 2 (General Awareness & English): This is the real game-changer. Your final selection and merit list depend purely on the marks of this session. And be very careful, there is a strict negative marking of 1 full mark for every wrong answer here.

Step 2: Understand the Syllabus

You do not need to study IAS-level books or tough engineering maths. The syllabus is strictly of the 10th-pass (matriculation) level.

  • Maths & Reasoning (Basic Logic): Focus on simple, everyday chapters. Percentages, Profit & Loss, basic number series, and coding-decoding.
  • English Language: You just need basic grammar, spellings, synonyms (similar words), antonyms (opposite words), and the ability to read simple paragraphs.
  • General Awareness (GK): Current affairs of the last 6 to 8 months, static GK (like folk dances, festivals, and national parks), and basic 10th-level science and history facts.

Step 3: How to Actually Start Studying Today? (Your Action Plan)

Okay, no more planning. Here is what you should actually do starting from tomorrow morning:

  1. Look at Previous Year Papers (PYQs): Before buying any thick, scary book, download 5 question papers from the last year. Just read them like a storybook. See what kind of questions SSC asks. You will smile and realize they are very basic!
  2. Clear Your Basics First: Do not jump to full mock tests on day one. Pick one chapter of Maths (like Percentage) and watch a free YouTube video to understand the basic trick. Solve 20 simple questions.
  3. Learn 20 English Words Daily: English carries a huge weightage. Buy a small, pocket-sized diary. Every day, write down 10 new vocabulary words and 10 idioms. Revise this diary every Sunday.
  4. Make Short GK Notes: Stop reading daily newspapers for hours. Start watching a “Monthly Current Affairs Summary” video. Write down only the important facts, like who won a sports cup or who is the new President of a country.

Why Starting Early Can Convert Your Dream into Reality

Most students make a huge mistake. They wait for the exam form to come out in June. By the time the form comes, they panic and try to finish a 6-month syllabus in just 2 months. They get stressed and fail. Since you are starting now, you will read peacefully. You will have the time to make mistakes, learn from them, clear your doubts, and give lots of mock tests without any pressure. You will be sitting relaxed in the exam hall while others will be shivering with fear. Trust yourself, stay consistent, and let’s get that uniform and joining letter in 2026.
