Home » Banking & Insurance » How to Prepare for the Reasoning Section for OICL AO 2025?

The Reasoning section of the OICL AO exam evaluates your logical thinking, decision-making ability, and speed under pressure. Since OICL follows a pattern similar to other insurance exams like LIC AAO and NIACL AO, candidates must be prepared to tackle a mix of moderate and tricky questions, especially from puzzles and analytical reasoning. With only one month left, you should now focus must shift towards high-quality practice, accuracy improvement, efficient puzzle solving, and mock tests. The goal is simple: prioritise high-weightage topics, develop fast solving methods, and build exam stamina through regular timed practice.

Topic-Wise Strategy to prepare for OICL AO 2025

In this section, we are talking about the topic-wise strategy to prepare for OICL AO 2025.

Puzzles & Seating Arrangements

Puzzle and Seating arrangement together constitute 15-20 marks in the examination. In such a scenario, preparing it thoroughly becomes extremely important. You need to solve at least three different types of puzzles every day, that is, linear, circular, box, floor or tabular. Use drawings for the absolutely given clues. Avoid spending more than four minutes on a single puzzle during prelims. Regular Practice to mixed-level puzzle sets will significantly enhance accuracy and speed.

Syllogism

Syllogism is a scoring topic, but only when you focus on understanding the concepts instead of memorising them thoroughly. Understand Venn diagrams instead of just memorising the different shapes. Practice new pattern concepts such as “Only a few,” “Few,” “Can be/Cannot be,” and reversed syllogism. Target 10-15 questions daily with a timer to improve speed. Solve sectional tests that mix new and old types of questions.

Blood Relations & Direction Sense

Begin with basic concepts, generational gaps, cousin relations, and marital connections. After clarifying the relationship dynamics, move on to coded relationship questions and family tree puzzles. For direction sense, practice left-right turns, angular movements, and shortest path concepts. Solve 10-12 questions from each topic daily. Be comfortable drawing diagrams quickly, as visual representation is the fastest method to solve the questions with 90% accuracy.

Coding-Decoding

Coding-decoding in OICL AO often includes logic-based patterns, matrix coding, and pair-based transformations. Start by revising basic letter shifting, positional value, and common code formations. Then, gradually move to new pattern questions where multiple rules apply simultaneously. Develop the ability to observe how input and output change, look for additions, reversals, substitutions, and pair-identification. Solve at least 15 questions daily from mixed patterns.

Coded Inequalities

Coded Inequalities are one of the fastest topics to solve if you master symbol interpretation. Begin by memorising the meaning of all inequality symbols and practice converting coded statements into actual inequality expressions. Target solving 20-25 questions daily. Your aim must be to decode quickly without rewriting long expressions. Practise chain inequalities and multi-symbol combinations. Use sectional tests to build speed and reduce silly mistakes.

Series, Alphabet Test, and Ranking

This category includes alphanumeric series, symbol series, classification patterns, rank-based comparison, and alphabet-based logic. Start with basic patterns and gradually shift to the main-level mixed series. Focus on identifying common rules such as skipping, reversing, vowel-consonant patterns, and positional shifts. Solve 20-30 series questions daily because these directly boost speed. For ranking, practice multi-person and multi-variable scenarios, especially when tied scores or missing positions are given. Always use a pen and paper approach for clarity. These topics require more practice than theoretical knowledge, as you solve patterns, you get clarity on how to solve.

FAQs

How many puzzles should I practice daily for prelims?

You should practice 2–3 prelims-level puzzles daily, mainly Linear, Circular, and simple Day/Month-based arrangements to build speed and accuracy.

How do I improve my speed in Syllogism and Inequalities?

Focus on timed sets of 10–15 questions, use Venn diagram shortcuts for syllogism, and follow sign-based comparison for inequalities without writing unnecessary steps.

Is an alphanumeric series important for prelims?

Yes, it is a high-scoring and frequently asked topic. Practice 20–30 questions daily, including pair formation, position-based, and odd-one-out variations.
