GATE Exam 2024: Strategy to Attempt MSQ Questions

In February 2024, you will face a challenge like no other: the GATE 2024 exam. This exam will test your knowledge and skills with three kinds of questions: MCQs, MSQs and NATs through a computer-based format. In MCQs, you will be given 4 choices, but only 1 is right. MSQs are like a puzzle: you have to find all the pieces that fit among four or more options. NATs are like a math problem: you have to type in the exact number that solves it. There is no need to fear MSQs (Multiple Select Questions) and NATs even if you make a mistake. Why? You won’t lose any marks. But beware of MCQs. For every wrong answer to a 1-mark MCQ, you will lose 1/3 of a mark and for every wrong answer to a 2-mark MCQ, you will lose 2/3 of a mark. Therefore, handling MSQs in the GATE exam requires a strategic approach. MSQs are a unique question type in GATE where you need to select multiple correct answers from the given options. There is no negative marking for wrong answers to MSQ and NAT questions. There is no partial marking for any question.

In this blog, we’ll shed light on the best tips to make the most of MSQs!

GATE Exam 2024: Strategy to Attempt MSQ Questions

Here’s a strategy to effectively attempt MSQ questions:

1. Understand the Question Thoroughly

• Carefully read the MSQ and ensure you understand the concept being tested.
• Identify how many correct options are required for that particular question.

3. Eliminate Incorrect Options

• Start by eliminating obviously incorrect options. This narrows down your choices and increases your chances of selecting the correct ones.
• Cross out answers that you are sure are wrong.

4. Leverage Your Knowledge

• If you have a strong grasp of the subject, use your knowledge to identify the correct options.
• Pay attention to keywords and concepts within the question that can guide you to the right answers.

5. Double-Check

• Once you have selected your answers, double-check to ensure that you haven’t missed any correct options or selected incorrect ones.

6. Time Management

• Don’t spend too much time on a single MSQ. If you’re unsure, make an educated guess and move on.
• Mark the question and come back to it later if you have time left after attempting other questions.

7. Practice

• Practice MSQs regularly during your GATE preparation. This will help you become familiar with the format and improve your ability to handle such questions.

8. Use Previous Year Papers

• Solve previous year GATE papers that contain MSQs. This will give you a sense of the type and difficulty level of these questions.

9. Maintain Accuracy

• While partial marking is beneficial, don’t compromise on accuracy. It’s better to get fewer MSQs correct than to guess randomly and risk negative marks.

10. Stay Calm

• Keep a calm and composed mindset during the exam. Anxiety can lead to hasty decisions and mistakes.
