GATE 2024: Can You Solve These Aptitude Questions in 4 Minutes?-Accept this Challenge!

Question 1: The Family Puzzle

Understanding family relations is paramount for analytical reasoning, a skill tested in GATE aptitude. Here’s a snippet of the question:

Given the statements:

I: E is son of C.

II: B is son of D

III: A is sister-in-law of C.

IV: D is father-in-law of C.

V: B is father of E.

Based on the above information, A is ____ of E.

(1) Mother

(2) Niece

(3) Aunt

(4) Daughter-in-law

Ans: 3

Solution:

Statements:

I: E is son of C.

II: B is son of D

III: A is sister-in-law of C.

IV: D is father-in-law of C.

V: B is father of E.

From above statements, we get,

C is wife B. E is son of C and B. A is sister of B or A is wife of C’s brother.

Case 1: When A is sister of B.

Case 2: When A is wife of C’s brother.

In both the cases, A is aunt of E.

Hence, option c.

Question 2: Painting the Pool

Calculating the cost of painting a pool involves geometry and arithmetic—a classic aptitude challenge:

Find the cost of painting a swimming pool that is 12 metres deep, 20 metres wide and 30 meters long given that the cost of painting the pool is Rs. 25 per m2.

(1) Rs. 45,000

(2) Rs. 40,000

(3) Rs. 36,000

(4) Rs. 32,000

Ans: 1

Solution:

Total surface area of pool = 2 × {(12 × 20) + (20 × 30) + (30 × 12)} = 2 × (240 + 600 + 360) = 2400 m2

But since we’re not painting the roof, actual area to paint = 2400 – (20 × 30) = 1800 m2

So, required cost = 1800 × 25 = Rs. 45,000

Hence, option a.

Question 3: Word Analogy Challenge

Analogies, a common aptitude theme, test your linguistic prowess. Here’s a language analogy challenge:

Select the word that fits the analogy.

Anger: Angry :: Humility:

(1) humiliate

(2) humour

(3) humble

(4) humorous

Ans: 3

Solution: ANGER is the noun, while ANGRY is the adjective. So, the relationship between the second pair of words should be the same. HUMILITY is the noun, and its adjective form is HUMBLE. Thus, C is the right answer.

Humiliate (v.) – insult. Humour (n.) – wit. Humorous (adj.) – funny.

Question 4: Reflection in Water

Spatial aptitude often comes into play. Try this reflection challenge:

Identify the correct water image of the given combination.

(1)

(2)

(3)

(4)

Ans: 2

Solution:

The water image of the given combination is as follows:

Hence, option b.

Question 5: Arithmetic Progression Challenge

Mathematical acumen is a cornerstone of aptitude. Here’s a taste of arithmetic progression:

The Sum of first ‘n’ terms of an Arithmetic progression is [2n2 + 3n], where ‘n’ is number of terms. Find the sum of 4th, 5th and 6th term of the sequence.

(1) 63

(2) 46

(3) 51

(4) 75

Ans: 1

Solution:

Required sum = Sum of 4th term + sum of 5th term + sum of 6th term

So, required sum = sum of first 6 terms – sum of first 3 terms

= [2 × 62 + 3 × 6] – [2 × 32 + 3 × 3]

= (72 + 18) – (18 + 9)

= 63

Hence, option a.
