If you’re preparing for the SSC CHSL exam, you already know that the Reasoning section is the best section to maximize your score in less time. Among all the reasoning topics, the Alphabet Series is one of the most reliable and high-scoring areas. It doesn’t require you to be a math genius or memorize complex formulas. If you know the position of letters (A=1, B=2) and can spot the gap between them, you can solve these questions in seconds. Alphabet Series questions are based purely on logical sequences and the English alphabet order. If you practice a few common patterns, you can easily secure full marks for the 2–3 questions that appear in the CHSL Tier 1 exam. To help you out of this problem, we have provided a free PDF of exam-level Alphabet Series questions for the SSC CHSL exam in this blog.

Why is the Alphabet Series Important for SSC CHSL?

In the Tier 1 Reasoning section (25 questions), the Alphabet Series is one of the most important topics.

  • Sure-Shot Marks: You can consistently expect 2-3 questions in every shift.
  • High Accuracy: Unlike Analogy or Classification, where logic can be vague, Series logic is mathematical (+2, +3, etc.). If you find the pattern, your answer is 100% correct.
  • Foundation for Coding-Decoding: Practicing this topic helps you automatically master Coding-Decoding, as both rely on letter positions.

Q1. Select the letter-cluster that can replace the question mark (?) in the following series:
DJ, HL, LN, PP, ?

(a) TR
(b) TS
(c) TT
(d) SR

Answer: (a) TR

Logic:
First letter: D(+4) → H(+4) → L(+4) → P(+4) → T
Second letter: J(+2) → L(+2) → N(+2) → P(+2) → R

Q2. Find the missing term:
AZ, GT, MN, SH, ?

(a) YB
(b) XC
(c) YC
(d) XB

Answer: (a) YB

Logic:
First letters: A(+6) → G(+6) → M(+6) → S(+6) → Y
Second letters are opposite pairs (A ↔ Z, G ↔ T).
Opposite of Y is B.

Q3. Which term will complete the series?
BMO, EOQ, HQS, KSU, ?

(a) NUW
(b) NUV
(c) MUW
(d) MVW

Answer: (a) NUW

Logic:
1st Letter: +3 → B, E, H, K, N
2nd Letter: +2 → M, O, Q, S, U
3rd Letter: +2 → O, Q, S, U, W

Answer: NUW

Q4. Fill in the blank:
AC, FH, KM, PR, ?

(a) UX
(b) UW
(c) VW
(d) TV

Answer: (b) UW

Logic:
Gap between letters is +5.

A(+5)=F → K → P → U
C(+5)=H → M → R → W

Answer: UW

Q5. Complete the continuous pattern series:

_ b c _ q _ b c p q _ b _ p q

(a) p, p, c, a, c
(b) p, b, c, p, c
(c) p, p, c, p, c
(d) p, c, p, c, c

Answer: (c) p, p, c, p, c

Logic:
Total letters = 15.
Break into groups of 5:

pbcpq / pbcpq / pbcpq

Q6. Find the next term:
Y, W, U, S, ?

(a) P
(b) Q
(c) R
(d) O

Answer: (b) Q

Logic:
Reverse series with −2 gap:

Y(25) → W(23) → U(21) → S(19) → Q(17)

Q7. Which letter cluster will replace the question mark?
P3C, R5F, T8I, V12L, ?

(a) X17O
(b) Y17O
(c) X16O
(d) X17P

Answer: (a) X17O

Logic:
Letter 1: +2 → P, R, T, V, X
Number: +2, +3, +4, +5 → 12+5=17
Letter 3: +3 → C, F, I, L, O

Answer: X17O

Q8. AG, LR, WC, HN, ?

(a) SY
(b) RY
(c) SX
(d) TX

Answer: (a) SY

Logic:
Gap between each pair of letters is 6.

A(+6)=G
L(+6)=R

Link between terms:
A → L (+11), L → W (+11), H(+11)=S
S(+6)=Y

Answer: SY

Q9. Select the missing term:
ZXA, USE, PMI, KGM, ?

(a) EAQ
(b) FAQ
(c) FBQ
(d) EBP

Answer: (b) FAQ

Logic:
1st Letter: −5 → Z, U, P, K, F
2nd Letter: −5 → X, S, M, G, A
3rd Letter: +4 → A, E, I, M, Q

Answer: FAQ

Q10. AD, EI, JN, PS, ?

(a) WX
(b) VY
(c) WZ
(d) VZ

Answer: (a) WX

Logic:
Check between terms:

A→E (+4), E→J (+5), J→P (+6), P→W (+7)
D→I (+5), I→N (+5), N→S (+5), S→X (+5)

Answer: WX

5 Preparation Tips to Master the Alphabet Series

Solving reasoning questions is not about being a genius; it is about being smart and organized. You cannot afford to waste 2-3 minutes staring at one question. You need the right techniques to crack the pattern instantly. Here are 5 practical and effective tips to help you master Alphabet Series questions for the SSC CHSL exam:

  1. Memorize Position Values: This is the most critical step. Learn the “EJOTY” rule (E=5, J=10, O=15, T=20, Y=25). Also, remember landmarks like M=13 (Middle) and T=20 (T20 Match). This helps you see letters as numbers.
  2. Master Opposite Pairs: SSC CHSL loves opposite letters (A-Z, B-Y, C-X, D-W). Remember them using fun tricks like AZad, BoY, CruX, DeW. If you spot an opposite pair, the question solves itself in 2 seconds.
  3. The “Rough Sheet” Trick: As soon as the exam starts, write A to M in one row and N to Z right below it (backwards). This creates a ready-reference chart for both forward positions and opposite pairs.
  4. Use Option Elimination: Don’t solve the whole series. Find the first letter of the answer and check the options. If only one option starts with that letter, mark it and move on. Don’t waste time solving the rest.
  5. Count the Gaps: For “Continuous Pattern” series (e.g., a_bc_d), count the total number of letters, including blanks. If it’s 16, break it into groups of 4. If it’s 15, break it into groups of 3 or 5. The pattern will become visible immediately.

FAQs: Alphabet Series Questions for SSC CHSL

Is the Alphabet Series difficult in SSC CHSL?

No. It is considered an “Easy to Moderate” topic. The logic is usually straightforward (+2, +3, -1, etc.).

How many questions can I expect from this topic?

You can consistently expect 2 to 3 questions in the Tier 1 Reasoning section.

What is the best trick to solve these questions fast?

The best trick is converting letters to numbers (A=1, B=2…). It is much easier to calculate “20 + 3 = 23” than “T plus 3 steps is W”.

What is a “Continuous Pattern” series?

These are questions where a string of letters is given with blanks (e.g., bb_c). You have to find the repeating pattern (like ‘abbc’). Grouping the letters is the best way to solve them.
