As the SBI PO 2025 Exam is just around the corner, students have started the last few days’ hustle, and to keep yourself ahead in the competition, you need to prepare hard but smartly. If you are fully prepared and want to revise or want to know some easy tricks to solve the most scoring topic of the reasoning section, that is, alphabet number series, then this blog is for you.
In this exercise, you will receive a sequence of 1-26 alphabet letters and 0-9 numbers in a specific pattern. Your task is to find the missing letter or number, identify the next term in the series, or spot the odd one out. Each letter is connected to a specific numeric position.
Example: A=1, B=2….. and so on.
In this type, only alphabets (letters) are used in a fixed pattern.
Example: A,C,E,G_ ?
Where the value of A=1, C=3, E=5, G=7, predict the next alphabet.
Solution: If you have noticed the question, the alphabets given are +2 in pattern, so the next one will be I, whose value is 9. A, C, E, G, I.
In this type, alphabets and numbers are arranged in alternating order.
Example: A, 2, C, 4, E, ?
Solution: By decoding the value of alphabets, we get A=1, C=3, E=5, and so on. If you observe here, also numbers are in a +2 pattern. So after E, we will get 6. Hence, A, 2, C, 4, E, 6.
In this reverse alphabetical order is asked, reverse alphabetical order means {Z=1, Y=2 ……A=26}.
Example: D = 23, F = 21, H = 19, ?
Solution: D = 4 normally, but in reverse: Z = 1 → D = 26 – 4 + 1 = 23, in the same way F = 6 → 26 – 6 + 1 = 21 and H = 8 → 26 – 8 + 1 = 19. If you have observed that the pattern this series follows is numbers are decreasing by 2 (-2). So, next: 19 – 2 = 17 → Reverse of 17 is J
In this type of series, each term is a combination of a number and a letter that follows a fixed arithmetic logic.
Example: 3C, 6F, 9I, ?
Solution: Numbers are increasing in a pattern of +3, i.e., 3+3=6, 6+3=9. In alphabets, also a +3 pattern is observed. I.e, C=3+3=6, which is F, and so on. The answer is 9+3=12 And in alphabets I(9) + 3 = 12L. So the answer is 12L.
In this type of question, vowels and consonants are patterned in alphabetical order.
Example: A, E, I, O, ?
Solution: In the question asked above, it contains vowels in order, so the next vowel that comes after O is U.
In this type of question, letters are replaced by numerical values and follow arithmetic operations(+, -)
Example: C = 3, F = 6, I = 9, ?
Solution: If you notice the pattern in the above questions, you will find that they follow a +3 pattern. So, as I=9, if you add +3 to 9, it gives 12, and when we put 12 in the alphabetical series, it will come to L. Hence, L=12 is the answer.
In this type of question, you have to find the position of an alphabet that is relative to another number.
Example: Find the letter 3rd to the left of the letter which is 5th from the right end in the word: “ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ”
Solution: Find the letter 5th from the right end → From Z backwards: Z (1st), Y (2nd), X (3rd), W (4th), V (5th)
Now find the 3rd to the left of V → Move three letters left from V: V → U (1), T (2), S (3)
The answer is S.

To solve the tricky questions of alphabet number series quickly in SBI PO 2025, here are a few tips. If you follow them religiously, then you will be able to solve the questions in the minimum time that too with maximum speed.
To solve an alphanumeric series, the very first thing that you should do is to memorize the alphabet positions both in straight as well as reverse order. For this, we have given a table below
Alphabet and its numerical value table
| Alphabets | Numeric values |
| A | 1 |
| B | 2 |
| C | 3 |
| D | 4 |
| E | 5 |
| F | 6 |
| G | 7 |
| H | 8 |
| I | 9 |
| J | 10 |
| K | 11 |
| L | 12 |
| M | 13 |
| N | 14 |
| O | 15 |
| P | 16 |
| Q | 17 |
| R | 18 |
| S | 19 |
| T | 20 |
| U | 21 |
| V | 22 |
| W | 23 |
| X | 24 |
| Y | 25 |
| Z | 26 |
Alphabet and its numerical value table in reverse order.
| Alphabets in reverse order | Numerical Position |
| Z | 1 |
| Y | 2 |
| X | 3 |
| W | 4 |
| V | 5 |
| U | 6 |
| T | 7 |
| S | 8 |
| R | 9 |
| Q | 10 |
| P | 11 |
| O | 12 |
| N | 13 |
| M | 14 |
| L | 15 |
| K | 16 |
| J | 17 |
| I | 18 |
| H | 19 |
| G | 20 |
| F | 21 |
| E | 22 |
| D | 23 |
| C | 24 |
| B | 25 |
| A | 26 |
Use this table while practicing the alpha-numeric series questions, and as you practice, the table will be gradually memorized for you.
Analyze what pattern is following in the series, +2, +3, or any other pattern. If you notice the first three terms only, you will get an idea. See if the pattern is in increasing or decreasing order.
If the pattern follows a combination of letters and numbers, then do not try to solve the terms together; rather, try to solve the pattern of letters and numbers separately, which we have also done in the examples given above.
Try to eliminate all the possible wrong combinations to get the right one. This technique is often used in various other types of questions and topics. Here, you have to eliminate the wrong terms.
The questions where positions are embedded, such as Find the letter 3rd to the left of the letter which is 5th from the right end in the word: “ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ”
Try to solve them in a way that one step at a time. If you have observed, we have tried to do the same in the example above.
To master the alphanumeric section, you need to practice a lot of questions daily and to help you in the same we have come up with a PDF, in which questions are giveen after deep analysis of previous year papers and exam pattern. The link of the PDF is given below.
